Alice Speak was born in 1907. She took an early interest in photography and in 1921 was taken on as assistant to Mrs. Ada Redman, daughter of Crossley Westerman, in the family's photographic studio. In 1935, Alice married John Longstaff and the following year took over the Crossley Westerman business at a shop in Hebden Bridge. She began a collection of photographs and postcards, many of the photographs being taken by herself, recording the life and times of the people of the area from as early as the 1890's. By the time she died in 1992, Alice had over 10,000 photographs in her collection.

We are grateful to Frank Woolrych and the Hebden Bridge Historical Society for the use of photos from their collection and also for their kind permission to use some of the images from the Alice Longstaff Collection.
