Notes from John Travis, contemporary historian
William Clegg built VALE MILL on Stansfield Road in 1854 and added a second weaving shed about 1855. Sometime later he erected a third shed on the site of his water-cooling dam on the opposite side of Stansfield Road. This was 2 storeys with a large shed behind it. Shepherd & Sutcliffe took over and began to card and spin as well as weave. It seems from the map that this third shed became Carr Mill, and was built about 1860. There is no documentary evidence available that Shepherd and Sutcliffe of Vale Mill took it over.

Charles Crabtree Ltd. was founded by Charles Crabtree who entered into partnership on 23rd December 1860 with John Marshall to run 22 looms at Burnt Acres Mill, Eastwood. Between 1868 and 1883 they ran additional looms at ANCHOR, SANDHOLME and Carr Mills. In 1870, John Marshall withdrew from the partnership.
