Notes

Hope Mill consisted of a warp-sizing house and a loom shed.

Robert Mills was born about 1804 and in 1851 appears to be a manufacturer of Naphtha. At that time, he lived on Mills Street in Todmorden with his wife Alice and seven children. Ten years later, he lived at Richmond Terrace near Hall Royd and was the owner-occupier of Hope Mill, working as a warp-sizer.

By 1871, Richard Coupe and James Law were in partnership at the mill, also as owner-occupiers. Richard originated from Houghton Towers in Lancashire. His father was a sizer working in Preston, and Richard followed the same trade. He moved to live in Todmorden before 1861, and initially lodged on Ridge Side with Benjamin Scholfield, a stonemason. By 1871, he had joined forces with James Law and they bought Hope Mill. Richard married Sarah and had several children, Lucy, Richard, Winifred, Monica, Eugene and James.

In 1871, he was living on White Platts Street with his family, and prospering well enough to employ a live-in servant. In 1881, the family was at 9 Garden Street and he described himself as a master cotton warp sizer.

At the mill in the same period, was another cotton warp-sizer, Abraham Gibson. He, too, lived at White Platts with his wife Priscilla and four children, later moving to 17 Wood Street.

Notes from John Travis, contemporary historian

Shed for 100 looms with high-pressure engine built about 1860 by Robert Mills in Vale Street, Tipside, in front of the JOINT STOCK MILL engine house. It was let to Samuel Crossley, joint tenant at Joint Stock Mill for about 2 years.
