EXTRACT OF WILL OF JOSEPH WOOD OF STONEHOUSE

Will made 20 Oct 1785

Proved 4 Dec 1786

This is the last will of me JOSEPH WOOD of Stonehouse Holmes in Walsden, yeoman

I give and devise to my elder son JOHN WOOD, my messuage or tenement called Lower Stonehouse in Walsden, with barn, cottages, land &c thereunto belonging now in the occupation of my said son JOHN WOOD; save except out of this devise, the two Holms called the Backholm and the nearer Holm, and also the new house and new barn now in my own occupation.

And I charge the same premises hereby devised to my son JOHN, with £100 to be paid unto my sons JOSEPH and HENRY, my executors.

In case (but not otherwise) he, my son JOHN, at any time after my decease, disturb one William Millns in the possession of 2 cottages at Halgh in Butterworth, which I have lately sold to him the said William Millns.

And all the rest of my real estate and effects I give and devise the same unto Mary, my wife for life. And I give to her for life, the use of all the residue of my personal estate.

And after my wife’s decease, I give and devise to my said son JOHN, my messuage called By Car in Butterworth, now in the occupation of JOHN BUTTERWORTH, with lands &c threreunto belonging.

And after my wife’s decease I give and devise to them, the said JOSEPH and HENRY, my two younger sons, those my 2 other messuages in Walsden called the Upper Stonehouse and Winterbutlee, with lands &c now in the tenures of JOHN WOOD, son of JOHN WOOD, deceased and JAMES MARSHALL.

And also the said 2 Holms, called Backholm and the Further Holm and the said new house and new barn now in my own occupation.

And I give to my said son JOHN £40

To my daughter BETTY £40

To my daughter HANNAH £40

All the residue of my real and personal estate I give, devise and bequeath after my wife’s decease, unto the said JOSPEH and HENRY, my two younger sons.
