John, Thomas, William and Samuel Dawson were sons of James Dawson, farmer of Bottomley and his wife Sarah (Law). Sarah’s nephews, Thomas and Samuel Law, owned and occupied the nearby Lanebottom Pickerworks. When William and Samuel Dawson had their children baptised, they were described as picker makers (c.1870) and are shown as the owners of the pickershop at Lanebottom in the Walsden Rates Book for 1867-71.

Fire at works of Thomas Foulds, band maker and hair cleaner, Lanebottom adjoining turnpike road. Floors of building and part of roof burnt through. Site beyond where gas mains extend, so lit by oil lamps, so no insurance. Damage about £200.
