Recollections of Todmorden 50 to 60 years ago.

Salford

The Woodyard was a woodyard and nothing more. In the back part of it there was a line of building along by the watercourse, respectively a joiner’s shop, saw pits in the occupation of James Holt, and 2 or 3 dwellings and a sort of shed at the end towards Pickles Bridge. It will be known to few that in a room of one of these dwellings, or adjoining thereto, the first printing press set up in Todmorden was placed, and a small printing office opened. The entrance to the joiners shop was from the canal bank.

Notes from John Travis, 19th century historian:

William Robinson of Stones and his son Richard were in the timber and building trade at the Woodyard, formerly occupied by John Holt. The Old Woodyard was eventually let to Scholfield & Booth, joiners & builders.

Public tea party 12th February 1861

On Tuesday afternoon a public tea party was held in the large workshop of Messrs Scholfield and Booth, joiners & builders of the Woodyard, Pavement, which was kindly and gratuitously lent for the occasion, being tastefully decorated with ever-greens etc. The object of the party was to celebrate the successful re-opening of St. Mary’s Church as a Sunday School after having been closed for abut 30 years.
