December 11 2009. This Index covers the time period 1820 to 1895 and the City (not the province) of Palermo. The complete Index contains about 20 million characters and was produced using a variety of high tech. gadgets, the use of which made it's completion achievable in a reasonable amount of time. However, the high tech. also left a trail of O.C.R. transcription errors, many of which were not cleared up by the Artificial Intelligence program. I transcribed the first Surnames by hand, which process considerably increased the amount of time needed to crunch through the transcription. I also hand edited many of the father names, needed to improve the triple sort (Family name - Father name - Mother name) which collected the marriages into families. Many of the high tech introduced errors are look-alike letters. S 5 $ 3 8 are mixed around. u and n are often switched, also e and o. M in Maria has many look-alikes. 'I' could be T. Where there is smudging of the old typed documents, or hair and fuzz on the document image, the final product is garbled. The presentation is in "space delimited" form, which in "Courier New", a mono font, gives the impression of a clear table. I have published the exact same marriage information on another free Web site that allows files larger than one Meg., in EXCEL form (which can be sorted) and also in .TXT form in large files.
