Charles N. Marsh Passes Suddenly
Well Known Cattle Buyer Dies At His Home in Stanwix
Charles Nelson Marsh, 52, Stanwix, well known cattle buyer in this vicinity, died suddenly of a heart attack this morning at his home, His extensive dealings in cattle buying throughout the district made for him a large number of acquaintances.
Mr. Marsh was born in the town of Rome March 4, 1877, a son of the late Charles N. and Ellen Marsh. He spent several years of his life in this city although the last years had been spent in his home at Stanwix. He never married. He is survived by one brother, Jesse D. Marsh of this city.

Sudden Death of Mrs. Earl S. VanSlyke
Mrs. Earl S. VanSlyke died suddenly of heart disease Saturday evening at her home, 314 N. Madison street. She apparently was in good health and there were no indications of illness. After supper while seated and talking to member of her family, she suddenly fell from her chair in what appeared to be a fainting condition. Dr. R. J. Marshall was called but nothing could be done, Mrs. VanSlyke having passed away. Dr. H. J. Teller, the coroner, was also called.
Mrs. VanSlyke was in her 56th year. Her maiden name was Josie Hawley and she was born in Rome, a daughter of the late John & Mary E. Hawley. She was married to Mr. VanSlyke Sept. 4, 1890. She was a woman of many fine qualities and had a host of friends and acquaintances who will sincerely mourn her death.
Mrs. VanSlyke was a member of St. Mary�s Church and in her younger years was an active worker in its welfare.
Besides her husband she is survived by seven children: Louis H., Clayton J., Elias E., Mrs. George Edy, Mae F., Gladys J. and R. J. VanSlyke, also six grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. William Henderson were held at the family residence, 240 Spring street, at 2 o�clock this afternoon. Rev. George F. Shepherd, pastor of the First M. E. Church, officiating. The singing was by Mrs. H. C. Midlam and Miss Guffin. Besides the many floral offerings from relatives and friends there were large pieces from the male employees of the Rome Brass & Copper Co., one from the women employees of the same mills, and one from the employees of the Rome Manufacturing Co. The bearers were Max Moore, Godfrey Worthy, Samuel Henderson, Arthur Watson, Ottos Smith, and Charles Hebron. Interment was made in Rome Cemetery.

Rome, Feb. 11 (1916) - Byron Crego, an esteemed and well known business man of Westernville, who died last Friday, had been in poor health for about three years, but was able to be about the house till a few days before the end. He was born in the town of Western 72 years ago and always lived there with the exception of about five years.
Mr. Crego attended the Presbyterian Church and was respected for his integrity. For a number of years he held the position of town clerk.
The funeral was largely attended at the church Monday, the pastor Rev. S. A. Freeman, D. D., assisted by Rev. T. Wells, pastor of the M. E. Church, conducting the services. The bearers were George B. Olney, Thomas R. Rees, George W. Bergman, Joseph Racha, Howard VanVleck and David VanVleck. Interment was made in Evergreen Cemetery, Stokes.

Clark Briggs - Well Known Business Man Dies Saturday Night - Conducted Printing Shop for Many Years

Clark Briggs, well know editor-printer and native Roman, passed away Saturday night at his home, 615 N. Madison Street. Though Mr. Briggs attended his work regularly he had been in failing health for some time and had been confined to his bed since last Tuesday.
The deceased was born in this city August 11, 1856, son of the late Ebenezer Briggs and Frances Ann Fuller. At the age of 17 he completed his apprenticeship with the printing firm of Sanford & Carr, proprietors of the Roman Citizen, a paper that he later for a number of years owned and conducted with Ernest E. Byam. Mr. Briggs lived all his life in this city with the exception of three years beginning with 1900 when he owned and edited the West Winfield Star.
Mr. Briggs conducted a commercial printing shop here since 1904 and during recent years had taken his son, Edwin S., into partnership.
Mr. Briggs was united in marriage with Mary Kochersperger of this city on September 9, 1880.
He was one of the oldest living member of the board of trustees of the First M. E. Church and was a member of Zroman Lodge, 233, F & AM.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Edwin S. of this city, and Charles M. of Chicago. Also surviving is one grandchild, son of Charles M. Briggs. The late Leonard Briggs, chief of the Rome Fire Department was a brother of the deceased.

Miss Evans was a native of Point Rock and a resident of Rome for the past 15 years. She was the daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth and the late Oren B. Evans, 307 N. George street.
She was a graduate nurse of the Rome Infirmary, having completed her course in 1924. Miss Evans was a member of the First M. E. Church, Rome Infirmary Alumni Association and the Foresters.
Besides her mother she is survived by six sisters and three brothers, Mrs. James Vaschersse, Mrs. John Condon, Mrs. Spiros Moshanos, Mrs. Thomas Bruce, Miss Nellie and Lena evans and Myron, Floyd and Harry Evans, all of Rome.
EVANS - On Friday, July 18, 1930, at Lake Delta, NY, Hazel Ruth Evans, age 30 years. The funeral services will be held at her late home, 307 N. George street, on Monday at 10:30 am and at the M. E. Church at Point Rock, NY at 12 o�clock (advanced time). Interment at Point Rock Cemetery.
Miss Holody was born in Utica 20 years ago and came to this city in 1916 with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Michael Holody, 412 S. Madison street. She had been in training at the Rome Infirmary for the past year and had been employed for several years at the Empire House and later at Stanwix Hall.
Besides her parents she is survived by four sisters, Helen, Bertha, Victoria, Eleanor, and two brothers, Frank and John.
She was a member of the Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord and she had attended the Transfiguration School.

Mrs. George Grems - Resident of Dunn Brook Passes Away in This City
The death of Lovilla E. Grems, wife of George Grems of Dunn Brook, town of Western, occurred at the Rome Infirmary on Friday afternoon at 3:30 o�clock. About 15 years ago she was advised by a physician to undergo an operation, but being of a very energetic disposition she had continued to defer the matter. She had not been confined in bed at any time, but about three years ago the decline in her health became more noticeable. A week ago she came to Rome for treatment, undergoing an operation at the Infirmary last Tuesday, after which she rallied well and was cheerful but a change came and she failed gradually until the end.
Her maiden name was Lovilla E. Ford. She was born in the town of Western and but for a short period when she lived in Osceola she had always resided in that town. She married twice. Her first husband was James Bruce. About 30 years ago she married Mr. Grems, who survives with a daughter by her first husband, Mrs. Marion Clemens, 424 W. Park street, three stepsons, Edward Grems of Canastota, William of this city, and Michael of Port Leyden, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Grems attended the M. E. Church of North Western.

Passed Away While on Visit to Boonville
Rome - Oct. 27 - Mrs. Mary E. Miller, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Nathan Bellinger of Delta, died recently at the home of her cousin, Mrs. Henry Traxel at Boonville, where she had been visiting. Mrs. Miller�s maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Bellinger and she was born in Boonville May 2, 1868. Her early life was spent in Boonville. She married Mr. Miller 36 years ago in Rome and they lived in the village of Delta for 21 years removing to this city 15 years ago.
Mrs. Miller was dearly beloved by her many friends, was a member of Holly Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and the Lady Maccabees. She is survived by her husband, one son, Frederick N. Miller of 637 North James Street, and one sister of Rome.

Funeral services for Loretta M. Condon, infant daughter of John & Nettie Evans Condon, were held at 9:30 o�clock this morning in St. Peter�s Church where a mass of the angels was sung by the Rev. Father James K. Bennett. The funeral was held from the family home on the Thomas street road at 9 o�clock.
The child passed away Saturday morning in a hospital here after a short illness. She was born in the town of Rome, Sept. 13, 1931. Surviving besides her parents are two sisters, Marion Elizabeth and Agnes J. Condon.
Four boys from St. Aloysius Academy acted as bearers. They were: Robert Barry, John Burns, Thomas Fleming, and Gerald Waters. There were many floral tributes. Interment was in St. Patricks� Cemetery at Taberg.

Ray G. Coon, World War veteran and long a resident of this city, died at 10 o�clock this morning at his home at 411 William street after an illness of three weeks. He had been in poor health for several years.
Mr. Coon was born in Sangerfield, October 23, 1895. He was a son of the late Edgar O. and Ida E. Coon. His mother passed away six months ago.
He was a graduate of the Rome Free Academy with the class of 1916. During the war he served on a navy hospital ship. He attended the First Baptist Church here.
Mr. Coon was a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the Rome Free Academy Alumni Association. He leaves a brother, Ory D. Coon in Auburn.

Robert E. Williams, 36, Perishes Few Hours After Leaving Fiancee to Spend Night at Hinckley Lake -

Remsen, Oct. 16 - Only a few hours after he had left the home of his fiancee, Robert Erwin Williams, 36, popular young local business man, was burned to death early today in a blaze which destroyed his camp at Hinckley Lake. The fire also destroyed Williams� new Studebaker coupe, about $450 in currency and a diamond ring.
Men who were first on the scene told of seeing Williams, burned beyond recognition, clutching a window west of the front entrance of his camp, which was a few hundred feet south of Northwood Hotel. It was believed at first others might have perished, but a thorough search conducted by the state police and Dr. James W. Graves, Herkimer coroner, revealed that Williams had been alone. Coroner Graves, who was called by Sergt. Joseph Devens and Trooper John Mitryk of the Remsen Patrol, state police, following a preliminary investigation this morning, was of opinion that Williams' death was accidental and that the fire had been caused by an overheated stove in the living room.
Mrs. H. A. Dillingham Succumbs to Illness

Sarah F. Walsworth, wife of Horace O. Dillingham, 423 W. Embargo street, died last night. Death was due to complications from which she had been ill ten weeks. She was born in this city, a daughter of the late Cyrus M. & Lavina Walsworth.
Mrs. Dillingham made her home in the West for a number of years, returning to this city 18 years ago. She had lived here since. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, of Holly Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and of Fort Stanwix Chapter, D. A. R.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Dillingham leaves a son, Ralph W. Harrington, by a former marriage to the late Frank Harrington. She is also survived by an aunt, Mrs. Daniel Bork of Lake Delta.

(1934) Mrs. Edward J. Rice, 36, of 514 S. James St., died at a local hospital of complications Sunday. Mrs. Rice, the daughter of Margaret and the late Charles Gibbs, was a native of Stanwix, but resided in this city most of her life.
She was married to Edward J. Rice of this city 18 years ago, and was a member of the Salvation Army.
Besides her husband and a mother, she leaves a daughter, Florence, at home, and a brother, William J. Gibbs of Blossvale.

Native of Steuben Dies at Home in Frankfort
Westernville, Oct. 2 (1934) - Mrs. David Pillmore received word of the death of her brother Frank Grower, which occurred on Monday at his home in Frankfort. He had been in poor health for two years but was somewhat improved recently and visited his sister here on Sunday Sept. 22.
Mr. Grower was born in Steuben September 11, 1856, son of the late John & Nancy Young Grower. In 1877 he was married to Miss Jennie Shirley and their home was in this village for a number of years but they had resided in Frankfort for the past 19 years. For 12 years he had been employed by the Union Fork and Hoe Plant.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in this village, while living here and was a member of its choir, and since leaving here was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Illion. He was also affiliated with several fraternal organizations, including Olive Branch Lodge 40, F & AM, he was a past royal patron f the Eastern Star, and past assistant grand lecturer of the Order of the Amaranth.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Bessie Greenwood of Syracuse, two sons, F. Allen Grower of Rome and C. Shirley Grower of Geneva.
The body will be brought here for interment in the family plot in Westernville Cemetery, following funeral services in Frankfort Wednesday afternoon.

Mrs. Carrie G. Williams Dies at California Home

Mrs. Carrie Griffith Williams, who left this city in 1926 to make her home in California, passed away in Los Angeles according to word received today by her niece, Mrs. Warren Pierce of Westernville.
Mrs. Williams was the youngest child of Mr. & Mrs. John Griffith and was born in Hawkinsville, June 10, 1861. On January 8, 1885, at Delta, she married Griffith G. Williams and for many years they resided in that village. Later they removed to this city where Mr. Williams died in Oct. 1924.
Surviving are two sons, Howard L. and Earl R., a daughter Mrs. Dorrance Rhoads and a grand-daughter, Miss Dorothy Williams, all of Los Angeles. Other survivors include Mrs Pierce and two other nieces, Mrs. James Birdseye of Utica and Mrs. David Grower of Deansboro.

Thomas Warcup, 53, Dies Following Short Illness
Westernville March 4 (1933) - Thomas Warcup, 53, passed away late this afternoon at the Rome Hospital after a five days illness. He was taken to the hospital Friday night.
He was born in the town of Western, a son of the late John & Cynthia Warcup, on Sept. 2, 1879. In February 1907 he was united in marriage with Miss Lena Freeman of the town of Western. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving besides his widow are six children, Lloyd, Ruth, Hazel, Fannie, Clifford and Doris Warcup all at home, five brothers, Stanley, Olin, Frank, William all of Westernville and Robert of Vernon.

Mrs. William H. Harger Dies After Long Illness
Westernville, July 3, - Mrs. Susan Alice Harger, 63, wife of William H. Harger, passed away at Rome Hospital early Sunday after an illness of several months. She was born in the town of Western Sept. 4, 1869, a daughter of the late James M. & N. VanDeWalker. She was united in marriage with Mr. Harger on Dec. 25, 1884. Her entire life had been spent in the town of Western. She was a member of the Westernville Methodist Church since girlhood and seldom missed its services. She was also active in the Ladies Aid Society.
Surviving besides her husband are four daughters, Mrs. Frank Koons of Rome, Mrs. Harriet Black of Chicago, Miss Laura Harger at home, and Mrs. A. S. Moe of Chicago, a brother John VanDeWalker of Western, a grandson Howard Koons of Rome and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at her late home Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 and at the Methodist Church in this village at 2 o�clock. Burial will be made in Westernville Cemetery.

Francis Havens is Claimed By Death

The man who turned on the first electric light in this city more than 40 years ago is dead.
He was Francis Havens and he passed away Sunday at his home, 117 N. Jay street. Mr. Havens suffered a stroke about a year ago and had been failing since. He was 84 years of age.
Mr. Havens was chief engineer with the J. D. Higgins Company at the time the electric light was first introduced in this city and he turned the switch that inaugurated the present system of lighting here.
He was born in Dresden June 18, 1847, a son of the late Charles and Hannah Havens and at the age of 14 moved with his family to Watkins where he resided for a number of years. In that place 63 years ago he married Statvia White, who survives.
Mr. Haven came to this city 45 years ago and became associated with the J. D. Higgins Gas & Electric Co. Later he was employed at the plant of the Rome Iron Mill as stationary engineer. He had been retired for two years.
He was a member of the First M. E. Church in this city, and besides his wife he leaves a son, Charles W. Havens sr. of this city, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arlington Hotel Fire Victim Dies
Miss Della Mary Krumm, 20 years old, died at the Rome Infirmary at 3:15 o�clock this morning of burns received in a fire at the Arlington Hotel last Thursday night when a cigarette ignited the mattress of a bed. The girl was found unconscious in the blazing bed when the men responded to the alarm.
Miss Krumm was born in this city Jan. 3, 1911, a daughter of the late Leroy and Mary Ellen Quinn Krumm, and all her life had been spent here. Her mother died when she was a child and her father passed away four years ago. Since the death of her mother, Miss Krumm had made her home with her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. James Quinn of lower E. Dominick street. She was a member of St. Peter�s Church.
Dr. H. F. Hubbard, coroner, announced that an inquest would be held tomorrow.

North Western Resident Dies in Local Hospital

Frederick J. Nessel, 48, life-long resident of the town of Western, passed away in a hospital here at 9:10 o�clock this morning. He had been in failing health for six weeks.
Mr. Nessel was born in Western Oct. 27, 1882, a son of the late John & Elmira Nessel. Twenty-eight years ago he married Helen Conklin of Western, who survives. He was a farmer.
He was a member of the M. E. Church at North Western and a member of the LOOM of this city. Surviving besides his wife are a son, Gilbert J. of North Western and a granddaughter, Beverly Ann Nessel.

Thos. A. Barry Dies at Utica Hospital

Thomas A. Barry, 41, of 506 Floyd Avenue, died Saturday evening at 7:30 o�clock in a Utica Hospital after an illness of two years. Mr. Barry was the son of Martha L. McCormick Barry of Schenectady and the late Chief of Police Thomas A. Barry and was a native of Rome.
Mr. Barry was graduated by St. Aloysius Academy with class of 1910 and was the first president of its alumni association. A son, Thomas A. Barry jr., star catcher of this year�s baseball nine, will graduate from the same school next June as the first son of a graduate to become a member of the alumni association.
For 10 years until 1923 Mr. Barry was bookkeeper in the City Water Department and soon after relinquishing that position aided in the formation of the Ideal Gas & Oil Company. He was secretary treasurer of the company until he terminated his connection with the firm after seven years.
On June 5, 1916 Mr. Barry married Miss Mary Isabel Williams of Whitesboro, who survives, with six children, Thomas A., Mary Joan, John A., Mae Quintin, (illegible) and Louis W. Barry, all at home. Besides his mother, Mr. Barry also leaves a brother, James L., and a sister, Mrs. R. W. McCabe, both of Schenectady.
Mr. Barry was a member of St. Peter�s Church and was affiliated with its Holy Name Society. He was also a member of Rome Lodge No. 96, BPOE and of Rome Council, 391, Knights of Columbus.

Arthur Hodierne Succumbs at Home

Arthur W. Hodierne, 54, died at his home, 306 N. Jay St., about (?) o�clock Saturday afternoon following an illness of six months.
Mr. Hodierne was born in Lowell Jan. 30, 1882, the son of Thomas & Katherine Sloan Hodierne. He had spent his life in Rome and vicinity. For many years he was engaged in making cigars in the city. Later he was employed at several local plants and had worked for the Rome Turney Radiator Company.
He attended the First Baptist Church, and was a member of Independent Hose Company 1. Until recently he had been a member of Rome Lodge 96, B.P.O.E.
He married Miss Frances Sherman who survives with two brothers Charles M. and Edward H. Hodierne, both of Rome.

Mrs. Grace Johnson Dies Suddenly at Boonville

The death of Mrs. Grace A. Johnson, 59, formerly of Rome, occurred suddenly at her home in Boonville late yesterday afternoon. She had been in ill health for about three years.
She was born in Augusta Center April 17, 1877, daughter of the late Dennis and Rosella Rich Mahaney. She became the bride of Gilbert L. Johnson at Rome Oct. 17, 1894. She moved to Boonville from this city more than a year ago. She had also resided at Port Leyden. She was a member of Calvary M. E. Church, Rome.
Surviving are her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Amos Martin and Mrs. Dewey Wiley, of this city, three sons, Erwin, RD #4, and Clark J. and Harold J., Rome, two sisters, Mrs. Elmer Burgy, Port Leyden, and Mrs. Henry Hall, Rome, two brothers, Fred Mahaney, Lyons Falls, and Rensselaer Mahaney, Buffalo, and 23 grandchildren.

Mrs. Rose Goodfellow, 61, Succumbs in Rome Hospital

Mrs. Rose Goodfellow, 61, 221 S. George Street, died this afternoon at the Rome Hospital. He had been in the hospital since March 17.
Rose Blanchard was born at Camden. She was twice married. Her first husband was George Loveland. About 20 years ago she became the bride of Edward Goodfellow, who died Aug. 12, 1936. She had resided in Rome for the past 18 years and was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
Surviving are two nieces, Miss Edith Reyes, Rome and Mrs. Ernest Marsh, Blossvale, and a nephew, Edward Blanchard, Syracuse.

The funeral of Ella Palmer, wife of Myrne Johnson, who died on Monday, was held this afternoon at 2 o�clock from her late home at 606 N. Jay Street, the Rev. D. W. Bunville of the Calvary M. E. Church officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. C. F. Miler of Waterville, former pastor of Calvary Church.
Bearers were Scott Williams, Frederick W. Palmer, Ray and Fred Hibbard. Interment was made in the Lowell Cemetery.

Funeral services for Miss Mary Evans, 56, who died Thursday, were held this afternoon at 2 o�clock at her late home at 501 Mary Street. The Rev. Walter H. Jones of the Bethel Presbyterian Church officiated.

George O. Carr Passed at Brush Avenue Home
George O. Carr, 67, a native of New London, died this morning at 5 o�clock at his home at 411 Brush avenue. Mr. Carr had been in failing health for nine months and for the past three weeks had been confined to his bed. He was the son of the late Alonzo and Rosena Carr.
On October 8, 1893 he married Eva P. Maxim. For the past 13 years Mr. Carr had been employed by the Rome Manufacturing Divison of Revere Copper & Brass Inc. where he was day watchman. Mr. Carr attended the M. E. Church.
Surviving besides his widow are four children, Mrs. Stanley C. Cope and Mrs. Joseph Wright of Rome, Miss Thelma Carr at home, and Ernest Carr of Westmoreland. Also surviving is a brother, John D. Carr of West Webster, NY, and a sister Mrs. Charles Herrick of Bartlett, and three grandchildren, Kenneth Wright of Rome, and Robert & Edward Carr of Westermoreland.

Mrs. Fred Kearns Dies at Her Home
Oneida Dec. 19 (1933) - Emogene Palmer Kearns, wife of Fred Kearns, died at her home in Lenox Ave at 1 o�clock this morning after a short illness.
She was born in Utica Sept. 27, 1868, a daughter of Leroy & Sarah Palmer.
Mrs. Kearns was a member of Oneida Chapter, 21, Order of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine and Mizpah Rebekah Lodge.
She is survived besides her husband by her uncle and two cousins, Hiram Palmer and Fred Falmer, both of Rome, and Charles Palmer of Herkimer.
Mr. & Mrs. Kearns were planning to start for their winter home in Florida when Mrs. Kearns was stricken. They maintained a large summer home at Sylvan Beach which recently caught fire and was slightly damaged.

Mrs. Smith W. Lucas
The funeral of Catherine Bennett, wife of Smith W. Lucas, was held this morning at 9:30 o�clock from the home of her cousin, Roselle Reh of Stanwix, and an hour later at St. Mary�s Church where a solemn requiem high mass was celebrated.
The Rev. Father Edward J. Kissane of Taberg officiated at the mass. The Rev. Fathers J. Norbert Lutz and Edward F. Doyle, assistants at St. Mary�s, were deacon and sub-deacon respectively.
Interment was made in St. Mary�s Cemetery.
