Last Friday the hotel at Point Rock, owned and occupied by John Bowman, was totally destroyed by fire. Loss $800, and no insurance. I learn that they saved most of their furniture, also their stock of liquors and cigars. Mrs. Bowman has not been well for the last two or three months. She is troubled with enlargement of the liver - a disease with which she has suffered more or less for the last eight or ten years. It is feared that the excitement at the fire and the work of removing the goods will confine her to her rooms for a long time. Had it not been for Wales Ferguson, Thomas Welch and Ase Wilson, the barn would have been burned also. They were the only ones that dared to go on top of the barn and carry water and throw it on the roof to keep it from taking fire. John has the sympathy of all his neighbors.
This is the first fire that we have had in Point Rock for a great many years, consequently the people have neglected to keep their buildings insured, and the Common Council has been busy with street railroad matters and has neglected to furnish any means for extinquishing fires only by water taken from Point Rock Creek in pails, and each individual to furnish his own pail at that.
