27 April 2006 - Thursday

We left Maries County via U.S. Highway 63 south 22 miles to Rolla where we got onto Interstate 44 east heading toward St. Louis.  Driving through this metropolitan area we encountered the usual heavy rush hour traffic and soon thereafter crossed the Mississippi River on Interstate 70.  The subsequent 154-mile drive across Illinois was uninteresting and went by quickly.  Early in the afternoon we entered Indiana near Terre Haute.  Again we encountered heavy traffic around Indianapolis.  It was here that we began the 100 mile trip north to Huntington where we had an appointment the next morning at Sportsmobile.

Then on to the Kil-So-Quah State Recreation Area located about 2 miles south of town.  Although the campground lacked some amenities like showers and electricity the sites were well constructed and maintained.  Since only a few campers were present we were able to obtain a nice site right up on the lake all for only $8.00.  It had been a long time since we had actually cooked a major meal at a campground and we were relishing the idea of eating dinner at the lakeside.  Tom immediately set upon cutting up the two potatoes we had purchased almost four weeks earlier. To this he

added carrots, onion, and mushrooms all wrapped together in foil with some butter and seasonings.  These were then put on the propane grill to be slowly cooked.  A short time later three good-sized chicken breasts were wrapped in foil and added to the grill.  Before sitting down to our meal we made a salad; something we hadn’t eaten in a while.  After the meal our Jethro joined us to enjoy our second campfire of the trip.  With a full and generally contented feeling the three of us relaxed around the fire and watched darkness settle over the lake.
