Introduction

Albemarle County is a county located in the the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 79,236. Its county seat is Charlottesville.

In 1744 the Virginia General Assembly created Albemarle County by taking the northern portion of Goochland County. Its original land area included today's counties of Amherst, Buckingham, Fluvanna, and Nelson, much of Appomattox and part of Campbell.

The county was named in honor of Willem Anne van Keppel, 2nd Earl of Albemarle and titular Governor of Virginia at the time. The large county was divided up in 1761, forming Buckingham and Amherst counties, at which time the county seat was moved from the formerly-central Scottsville to a piece of newly-central land, christened Charlottesville. Charlottesville, which was established as a town in 1762 and established as a city in 1888.  Albemarle County assumed its present boundaries in 1777.

President Thomas Jefferson was born in the county at Shadwell, though it was then part of Goochland County. His home of Monticello is located in the county, however.

Counties that lie adjacent to Albemarle are: Greene County, Virginia (north); Orange County, Virginia (northeast); Louisa County, Virginia (east); Fluvanna County, Virginia (southeast); Buckingham County, Virginia (south); Nelson County, Virginia (southwest); Augusta County, Virginia (west); and Rockingham County, Virginia (northwest).

NAME / DESCRIPTION:  Historic St. Anne's Parish was founded as a Church of England Parish in 1745.  Prior to that time the area encompassed by this parish fell into St. James Parish of Henrico County.  When Goochland County was formed in 1728, St. James Parish fell within its boundaries on both sides of the James River and westward.  Upon the formation of Albemarle County from Goochland in 1744, the Parish was divided into three parishes of which St. Anne's Parish covered what was then Albemarle.  During the pre-revolutionary war period, this parish was the center of sacred and secular life in Albemarle County. The original parish church was "The Ballenger Church" located near Howardsville.  Ballenger Church stood on a knoll 100 yards north on nearby Ballenger Creek. The building was totally abandoned and in ruins by 1820.    In 1762 the vestry of St. Anne's Parish purchased 400 acres near Esmont, Virginia, now on Langhorne Road (County Route 626), for the residence and lands of the rector of the parish.  This glebe was so used almost until the dissolution of the old parish in 1785.  North Garden Church, Forge Church and Broken Back Church near Palmyra were later established within the parish.  The most famous parishioner of the Colonial Period was Thomas Jefferson.  Unfortunately, none of these pre-revolutionary war buildings survived.  Today, the parish is comprised of three active churches: Christ Church, Glendower, 1832; St. John's, Scottsville, 1875; St. Stephen's, Esmont, 1914.

County boundary changes

Historical Changes in the Boundaries of this County

Conducting genealogical research in the United States requires an understanding of county boundaries.  As the population grew more counties were created to meet the public’s need for localized governments.  This phenomena was common in all states during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.  As such you must be sure that you are not looking for records in the wrong county or state.

The web-site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project provides interactive maps for all states. This Atlas is meant to be a resource for people seeking records of past events, and people trying to analyze, interpret and display county-based historical data like Land Records, Probate Records, Court Records, Tax Records, and Vital Records that document birth, death, and marriage.   Listed below are the boundary changes for this county, the dates they occurred, as well as the government statute that decreed the change.  To see actual changes in a mapping format follow this link to the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project .
