Baltimore County is a county located in
the northern part of the US state of Maryland. Its county seat
is Towson. The name of the county was derived
from the barony of the Proprietor of the Maryland colony, Cćcilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, in County Longford, Ireland.
Baltimore County does not include the city of Baltimore, which left the county to become an independent city in 1851. The origin of Baltimore County is not
known; the earliest known record of the county politically is January 12,
1659, when a writ was issued to its sheriff. Previously, Baltimore County was
more known as a geographical entity than a political one, with its
territorial limits consisting of the present day Baltimore City, Cecil and Harford Counties, as well as
parts of Carroll, Anne Arundel, Frederick, Howard and Kent Counties.
In 1674, a portion of Baltimore County, as well as a portion of Kent County, was split off to form Cecil County. In 1748, a
portion of Baltimore County, as well as a portion of Prince George's
County,
was split off to form Frederick County. In 1773, Harford County was split
off from Baltimore County. In 1837, a part of Baltimore County was combined
with a part of Frederick County to form Carroll County. The
separation of Baltimore County from Baltimore City occurred on July 4, 1851.[3] Towson
was voted as the county seat on February 13, 1854. The following counties lie adjacent to
Baltimore County: York County,
Pennsylvania (north); Carroll County
(west); Harford County
(east); Anne Arundel
County
(south); Howard County
(southwest); and Baltimore City (independent city, surrounded by
Baltimore County except to the south). |

Family history notes

Records show that in 1761 Joseph
leased 85 acres of land from Lord Baltimore.
He called this place “Buck Ridge.”
It is believed that the property was located south of the Gunpowder
Falls River about 5 or 6 miles north of the town
of Hampstead (now in Carroll County then in Baltimore County), Maryland. In 1765, Joseph Shaul signed the petition to move the county seat of
Baltimore County from Joppa to Baltimore, and in
1778 he also signed an Oath of Fidelity and Support to the
cause of the American Revolution. Joseph died in Baltimore County, Maryland
in 1785. The names of four of his children are named in his Will: John,
Joseph, Elizabeth, and Barbara. A
review of the documents pertaining to Joseph’s estate shows that he had
become a fairly prosperous man during his lifetime. Joseph’s son John
Shaul was born circa 1755 and grew to
maturity in Baltimore County. Around
1778 he married Catharine Rinehard daughter of Valentine and Anna Barbara Rinehard,
Sr. of
Frederick County, Maryland. Sometime around this event John Shaul removed to Piney Creek Hundred, located in
Frederick County |

Baltimore County has no
incorporated municipalities located entirely within its boundaries. The
county contains many unincorporated communities which are listed in
many collections of towns. Various organizations, such as the United States Census Bureau, the United States Postal Service, and local chambers of commerce, define these communities
according to their own criteria. Unincorporated areas have no local
government or defined boundaries, other than the following census-designated places recognized by the
Census Bureau: |

County boundary
changes
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Conducting genealogical research in the United States requires an
understanding of county boundaries. As
the population grew more counties were created to meet the public’s need for
localized governments. This phenomena was common in all states during the 17th, 18th and 19th
centuries. As such you must be sure
that you are not looking for records in the wrong county or state. The web-site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project provides interactive maps for all states. This Atlas is meant to be a resource for people seeking records of past events, and people trying to analyze, interpret and display county-based historical data like Land Records, Probate Records, Court Records, Tax Records, and Vital Records that document birth, death, and marriage. Listed below are the boundary changes for this county, the dates they occurred, as well as the government statute that decreed the change. To see actual changes in a mapping format follow this LINK to the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project . |

|||||||||||||||||||||||
Our “Gen-Tool Kit” has been primarily designed for those researchers who may be traveling to this location to perform on-site studies of their family history, or to just visit some of the interesting historical sites located in the area. It can be very satisfying to mix research with sightseeing at historical and scenic spots. Such activity not only gives you an understanding of the land but a needed break from intense research sessions. When visiting an ancestral county for genealogical research we’ve found that the three most important places to visit are the county courthouse; the county library; and the county historical and/or genealogical societies. It is also good to plan ahead by contacting any site you intend visiting in order to ascertain where it is and when it will be open. This is especially true with regard to historical and genealogical societies. We hope that the following information will provide you with a better idea of what resources are available, within this county, to the family historian. |
