Charles Co

Introduction

Charles Co

Charles County is located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Maryland.  Its county seat is La Plata.  This county was named for Charles Calvert (1637–1715), third Baron Baltimore.  On April 13, 1658, the governors council established Charles County, as Maryland's fifth county.  The boundaries were not clearly established until 1695, when the upper part of the territory became Prince George's County.  There was an earlier Charles County from 1650 to 1653, sometimes referred to in historic documents as “Old Charles County.

The following counties lie adjacent to Charles County: Prince George's County (north); Fairfax County, Virginia (northwest); Calvert County (east); Stafford County, Virginia (west); Prince William County, Virginia (west); St. Mary's County (southeast); Westmoreland County, Virginia (southeast); and King George County, Virginia (south).

Family History Notes

Our Moreland family line has been traced back to our 7th great-grandfather Patrick Moreland who died at Charles County in 1717.  Patrick and his wife Mary had at least six known off-spring.  They are John, Philip, Mary, Patrick, William and Jacob all born in this County between about 1702 and 1710.  John and Philip Moreland both appear on the 1733 Port Tobacco, East Side Tax List.  As such it is believed that this Moreland family lived in that part of the county encompassed by the Port Tobacco Parish, and as such attended the Christ Anglican Church that was established in 1692.

Jacob Moreland, son of Patrick was born at Charles County around 1710.     Jacob patented property on July 24, 1744 in Charles County, Maryland. This property contained two parcels of escheat land, contiguous to each other, totaling 110 acres, plus 3 acres of contiguous vacant land. The properties were resurveyed and reduced to one entire tract of 113 acres held of Zachaiah Manor.  Jacob named his tract Jacob's Birthright. (Source. "Certificate of Resurvey of Escheat Lands for Jacob Moreland," July 24, 1744, Charles County, Maryland). He and his wife Catherine produced at least three children between circa 1746 and 1750.  They are named Sarah, Walter, and Jacob all born in Charles County. Jacob appeared on the tax list of in 1758 in Trinity Parish, Upper Hundred, Charles County, Maryland. (Source : 1758 Tax List, Charles County, Maryland.  After owning Jacob's Birthright for 23 years, Jacob sold the 113 acre plantation to George Maxwell, a merchant of Charles County, for Ł120, on December 12, 1767.

Jacob Moreland, son of the aforementioned Jacob and Catherine Moreland was born in this county around 1750.  Jacob, age 18, and his brother, Walter, age 20, were listed as occupants of property leased by their uncle, William Moreland, on a rent roll February, 1768 in Zachaiah Manor, Charles County, Maryland.  By 1775 Jacob had married a woman named Celia.  Three known children are known to have been produced by the couple.  They are George 1775; Mary 1777; and Sarah c.1780.   Jacob took an "Oath of Fidelity and Support to the State of Maryland" on May 30, 1780 in Charles County, Maryland. (Source: Charles County Court Record Book Y3:549, Maryland Hall of Records Microfilm No. CR 34,670-2.)  Jacob's household on the 1790 Census in Charles County, Maryland, is composed of 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, 4 females, and no slaves. (Source: Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States in the Year 1790 - Maryland (1907; reprint Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing County, 1977), p. 52.)  He migrated from Charles County, Maryland, to York District, South Carolina, circa 1795.

La Plata is the county seat of Charles County.  The town was founded around 1895 after the river flowing into the previous county seat, Port Tobacco located a few miles to the west, silted up, ending the town’s utility as a port.  At the same time, a new railroad line made La Plata attractive as a new county seat location.  The courthouse was built after the Port Tobacco courthouse burned down.  Christ Episcopal Church also in Port Tobacco was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt in La Plata.

Trinity Episcopal Parish, Charles County, Maryland was created by the Maryland Assembly in 1744. It was comprised of portions of King and Queen Parish, Chaptico and All Faith Parish, Charlotte Hall. The original church was bought from Chaptico Parish. In 1751, a new church was built along with a Vestry House which was completed in 1756.  A vestry was organized in 1750, and on July 16, 1751, the first full time clergyman, Rev. Isaac Campbell, presented his letter of induction from Governor Ogle to serve Trinity Church.  On November 25, 1765, the vestry petitioned the Lower House of the Maryland Assembly to levy 50,000 pounds of tobacco upon the taxable inhabitants of Trinity Parish for the purpose of building a Chapel of Ease in Benedict Hundred. It became a regular house of worship in 1769 for parishioners who lived in Hughesville, Bryantown and Benedict. The Chapel came to be known as Oldfields Chapel.  Trinity Church was dedicated in 1793 by Bishop Clagett, the first Episcopal bishop to be consecrated in this country.

The Calvert family, holders of the hereditary title “Lord Baltimore,” had been granted the colony of Maryland as a proprietary by the King of England in 1634.  The Calverts made provisions for sharing in the increase in land values by setting aside specific tracts of land known as proprietary manors.  The proprietor had the option either to sell the manors as the price of land increased or to lease land on them to persons who were unable to acquire a freehold.  In all, there were twenty-three manors in Maryland, including three in Charles County.   Zachia Manor was one of the three of Lord Baltimore’s Manors in Charles County and is listed in Rent Rolls of 1766-68.  It appears as the fourth largest of the 23 manors with 9,637 acres. Zachia Manor had the poorest soil of any of Lord Baltimore’s manors.  As such Lord Baltimore’s leases were on better terms than private landlords could afford to offer.

County boundary changes

Historical Changes in the Boundaries of this County

Conducting genealogical research in the United States requires an understanding of county boundaries.  As the population grew more counties were created to meet the public’s need for localized governments.  This phenomena was common in all states during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.  As such you must be sure that you are not looking for records in the wrong county or state.

The web-site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project provides interactive maps for all states. This Atlas is meant to be a resource for people seeking records of past events, and people trying to analyze, interpret and display county-based historical data like Land Records, Probate Records, Court Records, Tax Records, and Vital Records that document birth, death, and marriage.   Listed below are the boundary changes for this county, the dates they occurred, as well as the government statute that decreed the change.  To see actual changes in a mapping format follow this LINK to the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project .

Tool Kit (pink)2

Our “Gen-Tool Kit” has been primarily designed for those researchers who may be traveling to this location to perform on-site studies of their family history, or to just visit some of the interesting historical sites located in the area.  It can be very satisfying to mix research with sightseeing at historical and scenic spots.  Such activity not only gives you an understanding of the land but a needed break from intense research sessions.  When visiting an ancestral county for genealogical research we’ve found that the three most important places to visit are the county courthouse; the county library; and the county historical and/or genealogical societies.  It is also good to plan ahead by contacting any site you intend visiting in order to ascertain where it is and when it will be open.  This is especially true with regard to historical and genealogical societies.  We hope that the following information will provide you with a better idea of what resources are available, within this county, to the family historian.
