Introduction

Campbell_Seal blue

Campbell County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia.   Its county seat is Rustburg.  Campbell County was established in 1782 from Bedford County. The county was named for Revolutionary War hero, General William Campbell, who is known for the 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain.   In 1784 Jeremiah Rust donated fifty acres of his land to establish Rustburg as the county seat.  Originally inhabited by the Monacan Indians and visited by explorers as early as 1670, the earliest settlement in Campbell County was established in about 1736 at Hat Creek by a group of Scotch-Irish pioneers from Pennsylvania. Other towns in Campbell County are Altavista (1912) and Brookneal (1802). Lynchburg is nearby but is an independent City.

Counties that lie adjacent to Campbell are Amherst County, Virginia – north; Appomattox County, Virginia – northeast; Charlotte County, Virginia – east; Halifax County, Virginia – southeast; Pittsylvania County, Virginia – southwest; and Bedford County, Virginia – west.

Family History Notes

Robert Douglass, Sr. and his wife Mary (Cummings) removed from Augusta County, Virginia to Campbell County around 1784.  Both Robert, Sr., and his son Robert, Jr. are listed in 1785 property tax records.   A few years later, in 1787, Robert, Jr. and his young family moved from Campbell County to the upper part of East Tennessee.  In June of 1787 Robert, Sr. wrote his Will and Testament wherein he leaves only “an English Shilling or a pisteern” to his son Robert. Jr.. As such one may conclude that the father was not favorable of his son’s migration into unsettled territory along the frontier.  It is known that one of his sons, Joshua, stayed on in Campbell County as he is reported to have passed away there around 1811.  Robert Douglass, Sr. passed away in 1794 according to his Will filed in Campbell County September 4, 1794.   Mary (Cummings) Douglass died in Campbell County December, 1810.  An attachment to Campbell County apparently stayed with Robert Douglass as shown in this 1837 Will wherein he will he willed money due to him from a person or persons residing in Campbell County, Virginia, (wonder if it was the aforementioned shilling?).

Campbell County is also mentioned in the history of our Scruggs ancestors.  By 1845 Theophilus C. Scruggs, son of Samuel Scott Scruggs, Sr. had moved to Campbell County, Virginia where he owned land.  By 1848 he owned land and resided in nearby Bedford County.

County boundary changes

Historical Changes in the Boundaries of this County

Conducting genealogical research in the United States requires an understanding of county boundaries.  As the population grew more counties were created to meet the public’s need for localized governments.  This phenomena was common in all states during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.  As such you must be sure that you are not looking for records in the wrong county or state.

The web-site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project provides interactive maps for all states. This Atlas is meant to be a resource for people seeking records of past events, and people trying to analyze, interpret and display county-based historical data like Land Records, Probate Records, Court Records, Tax Records, and Vital Records that document birth, death, and marriage.   Listed below are the boundary changes for this county, the dates they occurred, as well as the government statute that decreed the change.  To see actual changes in a mapping format follow this LINK to the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project .

Tool Kit (pink)2

Our “Gen-Tool Kit” has been primarily designed for those researchers who may be traveling to this location to perform on-site studies of their family history, or to just visit some of the interesting historical sites located in the area.  It can be very satisfying to mix research with sightseeing at historical and scenic spots.  Such activity not only gives you an understanding of the land but a needed break from intense research sessions.  When visiting an ancestral county for genealogical research we’ve found that the three most important places to visit are the county courthouse; the county library; and the county historical and/or genealogical societies.  It is also good to plan ahead by contacting any site you intend visiting in order to ascertain where it is and when it will be open.  This is especially true with regard to historical and genealogical societies.  We hope that the following information will provide you with a better idea of what resources are available, within this county, to the family historian.
