Frederick County is located in the western part of the U.S. state of Maryland,
bordering the southern border of Pennsylvania and the northeastern border of Virginia.
It is a part of the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area, and is often
recognized as part of Western Maryland. The county is home to Catoctin
Mountain Park (encompassing the presidential retreat Camp David) and to the U.S. Army's Fort Detrick. The county seat is Frederick, which was home to several celebrated historical figures like Francis Scott Key. The county may have been named for Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore. Frederick County was created in 1748 from parts of Prince George's County and Baltimore
County. In 1776, Frederick County was divided into three parts.
The westernmost portion became Washington
County, named after George Washington, the easternmost
portion became Montgomery
County, named after another Revolutionary War general,
Richard Montgomery. The central portion remained Frederick County. In 1837 a part of Frederick County was combined with a
part of Baltimore
County to form Carroll
County. The following counties lie adjacent to Frederick County, Maryland: Adams County, Pennsylvania
(north); Carroll County
(east); Howard County
(southeast); Franklin County,
Pennsylvania
(northwest); Montgomery County
(south); Washington County
(west); and Loudoun County, Virginia
(southwest). |

Family history notes
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
Around 1756 Valentine REINHARD, Sr.
migrated from Upper Saucon Township, Northampton
County, Pennsylvania to Frederick County, Maryland. With him came his wife Anna Barbara and up
to three children. It appears that
sometime around 1754 Valentin moved his family to
land in Piney Creek Hundred located on the border of Frederick County, Maryland and York County, Pennsylvania. Records that show the births of his
children in York County, Manheim Township are erroneous, because the Rienhard’s lived in Frederick County and attended the Sherman's (St. David's)
Union Church in Manheim Township, York County. Thus records of baptism are
recorded in York County. Valentin supported his family as a farmer and
distiller. He also served his
community as an “Overseer of Roads.” Rhinehart
Road, (now located in Carroll county), is a good indicator as to where the Reinhard family resided. Valentin
lived the remainder of his life in Frederick County, Maryland where he passed
away in 1792. Catherine Reinhard, daughter of the aforementioned Valentin, married John Shaul
and lived in Pine Creek Hundred until about 1800 when she and her family
removed to Chanceford Township, York County. After
1799 the Reinhard and Shaul
families would attend events at the Isaac GARDNER
(c.1775-1827) moved his family from Anne Arundel Co., Maryland west to
Frederick County, Maryland some time around
1801-02. It is believed that at least
one of his children Nancy L. GARDNER was born at Frederick County in
1802. Isaac then removed to Harrison county, Ohio in
1803. |

NAME
/ DESCRIPTION: Frederick is a city in north-central Maryland. It is the county seat of Frederick County, the largest county by area in the state of
Maryland. “Frederick Town” was laid out by Daniel Dulany — a land speculator —
in 1745; it was settled by a German
immigrant party led by a young German Reformed schoolmaster from the Rhineland Palatinate named Johann Thomas Schley who came to the
Maryland colony with his wife, Maria Winz. Schley built the first house of the new
town. The settlers founded a German Reformed Church (today the church is
known as Evangelical Reformed Church, UCC), which also served as a public
school, in keeping with the German Reformed tradition of sponsoring universal
public education. Many Pennsylvania Dutch (ethnic Germans) settled in Frederick as they
migrated westward in the late 18th century. Frederick was a stop along the
German migration route that led down through the "Great Valley" (Shenandoah Valley, etc.) to the western Piedmont in North Carolina. |

NAME /
DESCRIPTION: A hundred was a land unit which was carried over from England to
Maryland as a subdivision of a county or shire and its terminology was
derived from the fact that in each area there lived approximately one hundred
men who could be called for military duty.
Piney Creek Hundred was originally
located in Frederick County where it was bounded by the Monocacy
River in the west (current Frederick-Carroll County boundary), by Piney Creek
and Big Pipe Creek in the south (a line north of Taneytown), and by the Old
Hanover Road near Union Mills in the east. It became a part of Carroll County in 1836. In
current Carroll County Myers District (Dist. No. 3) is roughly the location of Piney Creek
Hundred, which seems to be the preferred name of Piney Run Hundred. |

County boundary
changes
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
Conducting genealogical research in the United States requires an
understanding of county boundaries. As
the population grew more counties were created to meet the public’s need for
localized governments. This phenomena was common in all states during the 17th, 18th and 19th
centuries. As such you must be sure
that you are not looking for records in the wrong county or state. The web-site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project provides interactive maps for all states. This Atlas is meant to be a resource for people seeking records of past events, and people trying to analyze, interpret and display county-based historical data like Land Records, Probate Records, Court Records, Tax Records, and Vital Records that document birth, death, and marriage. Listed below are the boundary changes for this county, the dates they occurred, as well as the government statute that decreed the change. To see actual changes in a mapping format follow this LINK to the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project . |

|||||||||||||||||||||||||
Our “Gen-Tool Kit” has been primarily designed for those researchers who may be traveling to this location to perform on-site studies of their family history, or to just visit some of the interesting historical sites located in the area. It can be very satisfying to mix research with sightseeing at historical and scenic spots. Such activity not only gives you an understanding of the land but a needed break from intense research sessions. When visiting an ancestral county for genealogical research we’ve found that the three most important places to visit are the county courthouse; the county library; and the county historical and/or genealogical societies. It is also good to plan ahead by contacting any site you intend visiting in order to ascertain where it is and when it will be open. This is especially true with regard to historical and genealogical societies. We hope that the following information will provide you with a better idea of what resources are available, within this county, to the family historian. |
