Harrison County is a county located in the state
of Ohio, USA. As of 2000, the population is 15,856. Its county
seat is Cadiz and is named for General William Henry Harrison, hero of the War of 1812, and the first
President of the United States to be elected from the state of Ohio. Harrison
County was formed in 1813, from Jefferson
County on the
East. And about 3/4 of the County on the West was formed from Tuscarawas
County. Two Northern Townships, Rock and
Union, were taken from Harrison County in 1833 and made part of Carroll
County.
Harrison County is located in the Seven Ranges of Ohio, which was
designated by Congress in 1787 as the first portion of the wilderness to be
settled in the westward expansion. Settlers arrived in the area in the
mid 1790s, several years prior to Ohio statehood in 1803. |

ANCESTORS
ASSOCIATED WITH THIS GEN-SITE: Sources
show that Jacob Johnson, son of Griffin Johnson and Sarah Mary Wright, was
born near the community of Tippecanoe in 1808, and that his sister Nancy
(Johnson) Davidson passed away here in 1911.
As such it is most probable that Griffin Johnson settled here at least
by 1808 a few years after his family moved to Ohio. As such at least seven of
his children were born in Washington Township between 1808 and 1823. In addition sources also show that Jacob’s
brother-in-law John Phillips passed away here in 1886, thus it is quite
likely that his sister Eleanor (Johnson) Phillips also lived here up to her death in 1901. |
