Hocking
County is a county located in the state of Ohio, United
States. Its name is
from the Hocking
River, the origins of which are disputed but
is said to be a Delaware Indian word meaning "bottle river". Hocking County was created on January
3, 1818 and was formed from Athens, Fairfield and Ross Counties. Its county
seat is Logan.
Residents named the
town in honor of a Mingo Indian chief. Thomas Worthington established the
community in 1816. The following counties lie adjacent to
Hocking: Perry County (northeast); Athens County (southeast); Vinton County (south); Ross County (southwest); Pickaway County (west); and Fairfield County (northwest). |

Family history
notes
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
After
the death of Dennis McVicker, in 1831, his wife Catharine moved her family to
Hocking County Ohio. In the 1840 census
she is shown as living in Washington Township only two households removed
from that of her married daughter, Susanna Lane. Residing with Catherine were her son James
McVicker and a daughter, probably Betsey.
In 1843 James McVicker married Elizabeth Ross in Hocking County. James
and Elizabeth McVicker lived in Washington Township after their marriage, and
at least five known children were born to them at this location. Their first
child John R. McVicker was born in 1844. The Hocking County Recorder's Office (Vol.
H, p. 650) shows Catharine McVicker had paid $50 to her son James McVicker
and his wife, Elizabeth, for 40 acres of land near Ilesboro, in Washington Township
located about 10 miles south of the city of Logan. The deed was signed 17 Jul
1846. Volume O, p. 519 lists
Catharine, Elizabeth, and James McVicker as receiving $350 for the same 40
acres in deed, signed 17 Apr 1854.
James McVicker is shown as a farmer in the 1840 and 1850 federal
censuses. The family moved from Ohio to Tippecanoe County, Indiana between
1854 and 1856. After selling their land in Hocking County. James and his family may have removed to the
city of Logan prior to any move to Indiana.

County boundary changes
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Conducting
genealogical research in the United States requires an understanding of
county boundaries. As the population
grew more counties were created to meet the public’s need for localized
governments. This phenomena was common
in all states during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. As such you must be sure that you are not
looking for records in the wrong county or state. The web-site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project provides interactive maps for all states. This Atlas is meant to be a
resource for people seeking records of past events, and people trying to analyze, interpret and display
county-based historical data like Land Records, Probate Records, Court Records, Tax Records,
and Vital Records
that document birth, death, and marriage.
Listed below are the boundary changes for this county, the dates they
occurred, as well as the government statute that decreed the change. To see actual changes in a mapping format

County Boundary Project . |

Our “Gen-Tool Kit” has been primarily designed for those researchers who may be traveling to this location to perform on-site studies of their family history, or to just visit some of the interesting historical sites located in the area. It can be very satisfying to mix research with sightseeing at historical and scenic spots. Such activity not only gives you an understanding of the land but a needed break from intense research sessions. When visiting an ancestral county for genealogical research we’ve found that the three most important places to visit are the county courthouse; the county library; and the county historical and/or genealogical societies. It is also good to plan ahead by contacting any site you intend visiting in order to ascertain where it is and when it will be open. This is especially true with regard to historical and genealogical societies. We hope that the following information will provide you with a better idea of what resources are available, within this county, to the family historian. |
