Introduction

Jackson County is a county of the U.S. state of Alabama.   Its name is in honor of Andrew Jackson, general in the United States Army and President of the United States of America. As of 2000, the population was 53,926. Its county seat is Scottsboro.  Jackson County covers parts of former Decatur County.

Jackson County was created by the Alabama legislature on Dec. 13, 1819, from land acquired from the Cherokee Cession of 1819.  Jackson County is located in the northeastern corner of the state. Most of the county is drained by the Tennessee River. The act establishing Jackson County designated Sauta Cave as a temporary seat of justice. Bellefonte was the county seat from 1821 until 1859, at which time it was transferred to Scottsboro, which was named for Robert T. Scott, an early settler from North Carolina. Other towns and communities include Bridgeport and Stevenson.

Counties that lie adjacent to Jackson are: Marion County, Tennesseenortheast;  Dade County, Georgiaeast;  DeKalb County, Alabamasoutheast;  Marshall County, Alabamasouthwest;  Madison County, Alabamawest;  Franklin County, Tennesseenorthwest.
