Loudoun County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia,
and is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Its county seat
is Leesburg. As of 2007, the town had been county seat for
249 of the last 250 years. Loudoun County was established in 1757 from
Fairfax County. The county is named for John Campbell, Fourth Earl of
Loudoun and Governor of Virginia from 1756–59.
Western settlement began in the 1720s and 1730s with Quakers, Scots-Irish, Germans
and others moving south from Pennsylvania and Maryland and by English
and African slaves moving upriver from Tidewater. Counties that lie adjacent to
Loudoun are: Fairfax County (east); Prince William County (southeast); Fauquier County (south); Jefferson County, West Virginia
(west); Clarke County (west); Washington County, Maryland
(northwest, across the Potomac River); Frederick County, Maryland (north,
across the Potomac River); and Montgomery County, Maryland (east,
across the Potomac River). |

||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Our “Gen-Tool Kit” has been primarily
designed for those researchers who may be traveling to this location to
perform on-site studies of their family history, or to just visit some of the
interesting historical sites located in the area. It can be very satisfying to mix research
with sightseeing at historical and scenic spots. Such activity not only gives you an
understanding of the land but a needed break from intense research
sessions. When visiting an ancestral
county for genealogical research we’ve found that the three most important
places to visit are the county courthouse; the county library; and the county
historical and/or genealogical societies.
It is also good to plan ahead by contacting any site you intend visiting
in order to ascertain where it is and when it will be open. This is especially true with regard to
historical and genealogical societies.
We hope that the following information will provide you with a better
idea of what resources are available, within this county, to the family
historian. |

Family history notes
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
John Ross probably came to
Loudoun County from his native state of Pennsylvania with his wife Mary
(Armstrong) Ross and their two known sons Joshua and Armstrong. This movement is likely to have occurred
around 1798. John passed away in
Loudoun County circa 1803. During the
time that the Ross family lived at this location at least four children were
born to Joshua and Jane Ross, they are Jane (c.1814), Joshua, Jr. (1807), and
Rebecca (c. 1810). The Ross
family remained in Loudoun County until at least 1815. Joshua along with his brother Armstrong
Ross then removed west to Ohio where they are found as early as 1820. |

DESCRIPTION: Leesburg is a historic town in, and county seat of, Loudoun
County, Virginia. Leesburg is located 33 miles (53 km)
west-northwest of Washington, D.C. along the base of the Catoctin Mountain and adjacent to the Potomac River. European settlement of near
Leesburg began in the late 1730s as tidewater planters moved into the area
from the south and east establishing large farms and plantations. The genesis
of Leesburg occurred sometime before 1755 when Nicholas Minor acquired land
around the intersection of the Old Carolina Road and the Potomac Ridge Road
(present day Route 7) and established a tavern there. |

County boundary changes
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Conducting genealogical research in the United
States requires an understanding of county boundaries. As the population grew more counties were
created to meet the public’s need for localized governments. This phenomena was
common in all states during the 17th, 18th and 19th
centuries. As such you must be sure
that you are not looking for records in the wrong county or state. The web site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project provides interactive
maps for all states. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries is meant to be
a resource for people seeking records of past events, and people trying to
analyze, interpret and display county-based historical data like Land Records, Probate Records, Court Records, Tax Records,
and Vital Records
that document birth, death, and marriage.
Listed below are the boundary changes for this county, the dates they
occurred, as well as the government statute that decreed the change. To see actual changes in a mapping format
follow this link to the Atlas of
Historical County Boundary Project . |
