PEACHEE FAMILY

Benjamin Franklin Peachee his wife Anna Abbott Peachee and the four eldest of their seven known children  migrated from Salem County, New Jersey to Mason County about 1794. It was here that the three youngest offspring were born between 1795 and 1800.  In 1802 his daughter Alice Peachee married Richard Eubanks in Mason County. They then resided in Fleming County were Richard owned property.  Benjamin Peachee is listed in the 1800 Tax List and 1810 census of Mason County, Kentucky.  Benjamin’s son James Peachee married Mary Rigdon here on 12 June 1811. Of this union at least four of their children were born at Mason county between 1812 and 1821.   Around 1812 Benjamin and Anna removed to nearby Fleming County.

WALKER FAMILY

Around 1792 William Walker of Montgomery County, Virginia migrated with his family to that area of Kentucky now in Floyd County.  It appears that William settled where Beaver Creek joins with the Levisa River near present day Allen, Kentucky.  This area was in Mason County until 1798.  It was herein that two of his children were born, Elizabeth in 1794 and Moses in 1795.  When his daughter Jane was born in April 1799 the Walker property was then in Fleming County as it was created in 1798. Two years later in 1800 Floyd County was created

NAME / DESCRIPTION:   In 1784, frontiersman Simon Kenton established a landing place along the Ohio River that was called Limestone.  By 1786 John May had acquired the land at Limestone and Daniel Boone established a trading post and tavern there. In 1787 the little settlement was incorporated as Maysville, though the name Limestone persisted well into the 19th century. By 1807 Maysville was one of two principal ports in Kentucky.  By the 1830s Maysville had a population of 3,000 and was the second city in Kentucky after Louisville. Washington, the county seat, had dwindled in importance after a fire in 1825 and a series of deadly cholera epidemics. A proposal to move the county government to Maysville was passed 1848.  Maysville donated its city hall, completed in 1846, to the county for a court house.  The current county court house is located at  100 W. Third St. Maysville, Ky. 41056.

County boundary changes

Historical Changes in the Boundaries of this County

Conducting genealogical research in the United States requires an understanding of county boundaries.  As the population grew more counties were created to meet the public’s need for localized governments.  This phenomena was common in all states during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.  As such you must be sure that you are not looking for records in the wrong county or state.

The web-site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project provides interactive maps for all states. This Atlas is meant to be a resource for people seeking records of past events, and people trying to analyze, interpret and display county-based historical data like Land Records, Probate Records, Court Records, Tax Records, and Vital Records that document birth, death, and marriage.   Listed below are the boundary changes for this county, the dates they occurred, as well as the government statute that decreed the change.  To see actual changes in a mapping format follow this LINK to the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project .

Our “Gen-Tool Kit” has been primarily designed for those researchers who may be traveling to this location to perform on-site studies of their family history, or to just visit some of the interesting historical sites located in the area.  It can be very satisfying to mix research with sightseeing at historical and scenic spots.  Such activity not only gives you an understanding of the land but a needed break from intense research sessions.  When visiting an ancestral county for genealogical research we’ve found that the three most important places to visit are the county courthouse; the county library; and the county historical and/or genealogical societies.  It is also good to plan ahead by contacting any site you intend visiting in order to ascertain where it is and when it will be open.  This is especially true with regard to historical and genealogical societies.  We hope that the following information will provide you with a better idea of what resources are available, within this county, to the family historian.
