Suffolk County is a county located in the
U.S. state of New York on the eastern portion of Long Island.
It was named for the county of Suffolk in England, from which its earliest settlers came.
The county seat is Riverhead, though many county offices are in Hauppauge on the west side of the county where
most of the population lives. There are also offices in Smithtown, for the legislature, Yaphank, and Farmingville. Suffolk and Nassau
counties together are generally
referred to as "Long Island" by area residents — as distinct
from the New York City
boroughs of Queens (Queens County) and Brooklyn (Kings County), which geographically
make up the island's western end. Suffolk
County was an original
county of New York State,
one of twelve created in 1683. It was
known for a time as East Riding of Yorkshire. Its boundaries were essentially
the same as at present, with only minor changes in the boundary with its
western neighbor, which was originally Queens
County but since 1899
has been Nassau
County. The counties
that lie adjacent to Suffolk are: Nassau
County, New York – west;
Fairfield
County, Connecticut - northwest, water boundary only, across
Long
Island Sound; New
Haven County, Connecticut - north, water boundary only, across
Long Island Sound; Middlesex
County, Connecticut - north, water boundary only, across

London County, Connecticut - north, water boundary only, across Fishers Island Sound; and Washington
County, Rhode Island - northeast, water boundary only, across

James
Abbott came to the Colonies from Somersetshire, England about 1690. In 1721 James moved to Huntington, Suffolk
County, Long Island where he and several of his sons owned adjoining tracts
in the Half Hollow Hills section.
James probably continued to live
here until the time of his death which occurred after 1754. Joseph
Abbott, son of James Abbott, came to Suffolk prior to 1719. His son Abdon was
born Huntington around 1719. In
1735, Joseph Abbott's brother Benjamin deeded to him 200 acres of the family
tract at Half Hollow Hills, but he was perhaps already settled on part of
this land, as a 1734 deed for another parcel of it mentions Joseph's land as
a boundary. Half Hollow Hills is now located in the town of Dix Hills,
Suffolk Co., NY. Joseph Abbott may
have relocated back to Queen’s County where he died in 1740. Abdon Abbott
continued to live in Suffolk County until after the death of his father
Joseph in 1740. Abdon
migrated to Salem County, New Jersey prior to 1747. |
