Introduction

Union County is located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. In 2000, its population was 29,881. Its county seat is Union. The county's Carnegie Library was named Best Small Library in America by Library Journal for 2009.

Union County was named for the old Union Church, which served both the Presbyterian and Episcopal congregations in the area. The church was erected in 1765 near the present day town of Union, the county seat.   Union County was created as a part of Ninety Six District in 1785. It was part of Pinckney District from 1791 to 1800 and became a separate district when Pinckney was dissolved in 1800. The upper part of the county later went to form Cherokee County in 1897. The early settlers in this area were mainly Scotch-Irish from Virginia and Pennsylvania, who began immigrating to the South Carolina upcountry in the 1750s.

Counties that lie adjacent to Union are: Cherokee County, South Carolina – north; York County, South Carolina – northeast; Chester County, South Carolina – east; Fairfield County, South Carolina – southeast; Newberry County, South Carolina – south; Laurens County, South Carolina southwest; and Spartanburg County, South Carolina – northwest.

Family history notes

Family History Notes

Ambrose Yarborough migrated from Amelia County to Union County, South Carolina.   According to records at the Union County Courthouse Ambrose settled on the Tyger (tiger) River near Blackstocks Ford (34.6817°N, 81.8039°W). This location was in Union County, S.C. and very near the Spartanburg County line.  The Blackstocks Ford, was named for William Blackstock and it was at this site that a battle of the Revolutionary war was fought.  In 1777 Ann "Nancy" Yarborough married Peter Pinnell this event probably occurred in the area of the old Ninety-Six District that now lies in Union County, South Carolina.  It is most probable the Peter and Nancy moved to Greenville County soon after their marriage.  Ambrose Yarborough died in Union County in 1788.
