Introduction

York County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of 2004, the estimated population was 401,613. York County is located in the Susquehanna Valley, a large fertile agricultural region in south-central Pennsylvania.

York County was created on August 19, 1749 from part of Lancaster County and named either for the Duke of York, an early patron of the Penn family, or for the city and shire of York in England. Its county seat is the city of York. York was laid out in 1741, incorporated as a borough on September 24, 1787 and chartered as a city on January 11, 1887. York served as America's first capitol-home to the Continental Congress from September 1777-June 1778.

With seventy-two different municipalities, York County has a diverse range of communities. From small quaint boroughs where everybody knows everyone else to large urban communities such as Hanover and the City of York.

Adjacent counties are: Cumberland County (north); Dauphin County (northeast); Lancaster County (east); Harford County, Maryland (southeast); Baltimore County, Maryland (south); Carroll County, Maryland (southwest); and Adams County (west).

Gen Tool-Kit

Our “Gen-Tool Kit” has been primarily designed for those researchers who may be traveling to this location to perform on-site studies of their family history, or to just visit some of the interesting historical sites located in the area.  It can be very satisfying to mix research with sightseeing at historical and scenic spots.  Such activity not only gives you an understanding of the land but a needed break from intense research sessions.  When visiting an ancestral county for genealogical research we’ve found that the three most important places to visit are the county courthouse; the county library; and the county historical and/or genealogical societies.  It is also good to plan ahead by contacting any site you intend visiting in order to ascertain where it is and when it will be open.  This is especially true with regard to historical and genealogical societies.  We hope that the following information will provide you with a better idea of what resources are available, within this county, to the family historian.

You will end up in a town called Craley. At the flashing red light, go straight through. This will be New Bridgeville Road.  Continue on this road until you come to Burkholder Road, a few miles. There you want to make a left. You should pass the volunteer fire company on the left, once you make the left. The cemetery in a couple of miles on the left. Site / Description Shrewsbury Township, was settled in 1739 and Incorporated in 1742, while part of Lancaster County.  Shrewsbury Township was among the original 13 Townships that made up York County and one of the first municipalities to be established west of the Susquehanna River.  At the time the Townships were formed Shrewsbury included the present Townships of Springfield, Hopewell, East Hopewell and North Hopewell.  The first settlers in the area were mostly English and Scottish-Irish; other portions of the area were settled under Maryland land titles.  When the township was established, the majority of the citizens were English as reflected by the English name of Shrewsbury. The Germans began to locate in the township shortly after its formation, and many of the former English settlers sold their lands. Conflicting feelings arose between the border settlers in Pennsylvania and Maryland as a result of the aforementioned land titles, and the dispute was not resolved until 1767 through the establishment of the Mason-Dixon Line.

County boundary changes

Historical Changes in the Boundaries of this County

Conducting genealogical research in the United States requires an understanding of county boundaries.  As the population grew more counties were created to meet the public’s need for localized governments.  This phenomena was common in all states during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.  As such you must be sure that you are not looking for records in the wrong county or state.

The web site for the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project provides interactive maps for all states. The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries is meant to be a resource for people seeking records of past events, and people trying to analyze, interpret and display county-based historical data like Land Records, Probate Records, Court Records, Tax Records, and Vital Records that document birth, death, and marriage.   Listed below are the boundary changes for this county, the dates they occurred, as well as the government statute that decreed the change.  To see actual changes in a mapping format follow this link to the Atlas of Historical County Boundary Project .
