Iowa is a state
located in the Midwestern region of the United States of America, an
area often referred to as the "American Heartland."
It derives its name from the Ioway people, one of the many American Indian
tribes that occupied the state at the time of European
exploration. Des
Moines is Iowa's capital and largest city. Iowa was a part of the French colony of New
France. After the Louisiana Purchase, settlers
laid the foundation for an agriculture-based economy in the heart of the Corn
Belt. Iowa is often known
as the "Food Capital of the World,” but Iowa’s economy, culture, and
landscape are diverse. The first
American settlers officially moved to Iowa in June 1833. Primarily, they were
families from Ohio,
Illinois,
Indiana,
and Missouri.
On July 4, 1838, the U.S. Congress established
the Territory of Iowa. President
Martin Van Buren appointed Robert
Lucas governor of the territory, which at the time had 22 counties
and a population of 23,242. Almost
immediately after achieving territorial status, a clamor arose for statehood.
On December 28, 1846, Iowa became the 29th state in the Union when
President James K. Polk signed Iowa's
admission bill into law. |
