Using Layer Blend Modes to Fix Red-Eye

red-eyed baby

This tutorial uses the photo of the two small children with bad red-eye that was included as a tutorial image with Paint Shop Pro 7.  That image belongs to Jasc, so it is not posted here for downloading.

  1. Selecting the red color  Zoom in on the photo if necessary and use the eyedropper to select the red color in the pupil.  Try to pick the shade of red there is the most of in the eye.

  2. Make a new layer by going to Layers > New (PSP 5) or Layers > New Raster Layer (PSP 6 and later).  Set the blend mode to "Difference".

  3. painting the pupil  Select the paint brush and make sure its hardness is set at or below 50 so that the edge won't look artificial.  If you prefer, make a selection (with anti-alias on and feather set at about 2) and use the Flood Fill tool instead of the Paint Brush.  Using the red color you selected in step 1, paint over the pupil.  Use a small brush size and try not to paint over the glint (it will turn aqua if you do).  If you do paint over it, you can always select the eraser tool later and erase it using a very small brush size - try to match the eraser to the size of the glint so you can do this in just one try.  Set the eraser's hardness to 0 (zero) so it gives you a soft edge.

pupil layer  The same pupil after painting with the other layers turned off.

  4. Repeat the above steps for the other eye.  You should not have to change layers to use the eyedropper on the second eye - it will "see through" the transparent areas of layers underneath it.

  5. pupils after painting  The eyes should look something like this when you're finished.  There may be a slight reddish fringe around the pupils, but when zoomed out, it shouldn't be noticeable.
