Barringers in Phoenicia, Ulster Co., NY
1919
- Far left in the striped dress: my great-grandmother Bertha (Barringer) Van Kleeck (1874-1953), wife of Abram Van Kleeck (1871-1954, see the Van Kleeck section for more information).
- The very tall man next to Bertha is her brother Richard "Uncle Dick" Barringer (1880-1958). Richard married ca. 1938 to Anabelle Simpkins (1918-1968).
- The woman in the back, standing next to Richard, is Elsie Steadley (Steadly?). She was a summer boarder who became good friends with Bertha's daughters.
- The man in the dark suit standing in front of Richard is Carl Gazley (Gazly?) The woman with the big smile standing next to Carl is his sister Pearl. Pearl was Richard Barringer's girlfriend at the time this photo was taken.
- The young woman in white at the front of the photo is Reba (Van Kleeck) Shurter (1897-1987), the daughter of Julia (Barringer) Van Kleeck and Henry Francis Van Kleeck (see below). Reba married Harry Shurter and they had three daughters.
- The woman in front near the center of the photo with the dark skirt is Reba's mother Julia (Barringer) Van Kleeck (1877-1963). She was the wife of Henry Francis Van Kleeck (1869-1927), the older brother of Bertha's husband Abram Van Kleeck. Bertha (Barringer) Van Kleeck (above) was Julia's second cousin and Henry's second cousin once removed (very tangled family tree with lots of intermarrying).
- The couple on the far right are identified as Dr. and Mrs. Ferguson. They were summer boarders who were probably staying at the boarding house in the area run by Bertha (Barringer) Van Kleeck and her family.
There was a lot of intermarrying between the Van Kleecks and the Barringers and it can all get very confusing at times, especially with so many names being re-used generation after generation. For more information, see the Van Kleeck section.
