At
0319, the ATHELKNIGHT, dispersed from Convoy OS-28, was torpedoed and sunk by
gunfire by U-172 SE of Bermuda.
There
were four navy gunners and three army gunners on board.
Four
crewmembers and five gunners were lost.
In
all, the master (Captain Roberts), 39 crew members and three gunners were
rescued:
The
master and 24 survivors, after 28 days, were taken on board the British
merchantman EMPIRE AUSTIN and landed at Capetown;
After the attack, the Uboat came alongside one of the the
lifeboats and passed over supplies for the survivors. Douglas Crook (second officer) and 17 survivors landed on St.
Bartholomew Island, Leeward Islands on 23 June, after sailing in their lifeboat
for nearly 1200 miles. Douglas Crook was awarded the MBE for his exceptional
bravery and leadership.
