1940 20th October U-47 sank SS WHITFORD, SS LA ESTANCIA and damaged SS ATHELMONARCH in Convoy HX-79.

1943 - 15th June  At 1430, the ATHELMONARCH, on voyage Beirut to Alexandria with fuel oil, escorted by the Greek destroyer HNMS AETOS, was torpedoed and sunk 32 20N 34 39E by U-97 NW of Jaffa, Palestine. Four crewmembers were lost. The master, 35 crewmembers and eleven gunners were picked up by the destroyer and landed at Beirut

Husband of Christina Tedman, of Birkenhead.

 

Died 12th May 1943

DONOVAN, Master, THOMAS JAMES, Age 54.

Son of Michael and Annie Donovan;

husband of Elizabeth Donovan, of Crosby, Liverpool.

Buried Basra War Cemetery.
