John Andrews
Was known as 'the greatest herring merchant in Europe', in

Lord Carteret – John Carteret, 1st Earl
Granville
1690–1763, English statesman. Ambassador to Sweden
(1719–20) and as a secretary of state (1721–24), but his favour with George I posed a threat to Robert Walpole, who finally
forced his resignation and sent him to
Ireland as lord lieutenant in 1724. Gained popularity over his management and
withdrawal of the English currency patents and returned to England in 1730. He
then led the opposition that in 1742 finally accomplished Walpole’s downfall.
He was the chief minister in the new cabinet but soon became unpopular because
he supported George II’s Hanoverian policies and aided Maria Theresa in the War
of the Austrian Succession. He was dismissed in 1744.

Prince of Wales - Frederick (1707-1751), son of George II and father of George
III, was born 6th Jan 1707, Duke of Gloucester, made Prince of Wales

1737 he was banished from Court. Set up a court of his own at Norfolk House, St
James’s Square and this became a resort of all who opposed George II and Sir
Robert Walpole. Died 20th
March 1751

Sir Thomas HANMER

Sir Harbord HARBORD 2nd Baronet of Suffield and 1st Baron
Suffield,
b. 26 January 1734, Gunton, Norfolk, d. 04 February 1810

Saumur, France; Clare Hall Cambridge (mathematics), 1706; MA, 1717; interested
in coins; Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, 1719; lost Presidency of Royal
Society to Sir Hans Sloane, 1727; regained Presidency at Sloane's retirement,
1741; published Table of English Gold Coins at his own expense, and Table of
Silver Coins from the Conquest published by the Society of Antiquaries, 1744;
the Tables were much consulted; President of the Society of Antiquaries from
1750 until his death in 1754.
The Child Family and Child’s Bank
The bank had its origins in the business of a family of
goldsmiths – John Wheeler died in 1573, and his son, also John, took the
business into Fleet Street, then moved to the sign of Marygold at Temple Bar. Francis
Child, born in December 1642, Headington, Wiltshire. He was the eighth of 11
children of a wealthy clothier, and became an apprentice goldsmith. In 1664 he
joined the firm of Robert Blanchard, who had married a rich widow, Margaret
Wheeler. Through his work, Francis Child met and married Elizabeth Wheeler,
only child and sole heir to the Wheeler and Blanchard fortunes. He became a
partner in the business in 1671 and inherited the business in 1681, which
operated more and more as a bank. He revived his jewellery business, which
became one of the largest in London, and became jeweller to William III. He was
knighted 1689, made Lord Mayor of London in 1698, and was a director of
Greenwich Hospital, MP for City of London 1702, MP for Devizes 1705-8 and 1710.
Osterley House was acquired not a place to live, but to protect his investment
in Nicholas Barbon's unpaid mortgage, which he achieved a few months before his
death 4th October 1713. Robert, his eldest son, became the first in
the family to live at Osterley in 1720, but died unmarried in 1721, to be
succeeded by his brother Sir Francis Child the younger ( entered in Edmond
Prideaux’s Cash Book as “Sr:Fr:Child” ). The younger Francis was even more
successful than his father. He was a director of the East India Company for 17
years, Prime Master of the Goldsmith's Company, Tory MP and Lord Mayor. Next
came Samuel ( “Mr:Child”, as Edmond had entered in his Cash Book ), the only
brother to marry, who moved to Osterley.
Sir Richard Hopkins – Company Director of The South Sea Company.
The South Sea Company was founded in 1711 to trade (mainly in
slaves) with Spanish America. The whole was to end in an international
financial crisis, which would strike at the very heart of English government,
and one which, even today, is remembered as the South Sea Bubble. I will write
on this subject, on another page, at a later date.
