Russell was found November 2, 2002 in a shelter belt 12 miles northwest of Devils Lakes, a town about 90 miles west of Grand Forks. His death was ruled a homicide.

Russell Turcotte had recently completed firefighter training but was enjoying a 'vagabond lifestyle'. Russell went missing July 12, 2002. He was last seen at a gas station in the vicinity of the 4300 block of Gateway Drive near Highway 2 in Grand Forks, ND. He was on his way home from a week-long 'hippie gathering' in Brainerd, Michigan and was returning to attend a family wedding, but never arrived and never picked up the money at Western Union that they left for him at Grand Forks.

Russ Turcotte was apparently abducted, abused in a remote area, and may have been bludgeoned to death. Some believe Russ was a victim of a serial killer, Joseph Edward 'Jet' Duncan III, who targetted young men. Russ, as seen in his last photo above, was exhausted, and gaunt, and vulnerable the summer of 2002. Only national and international attention, pressuring the state Governor, resulted in action by the local police force. Unlike a blond, blue-eyed white felmale victim, Russ' search took 3 months, not 3 hours to get off the ground, and included less than a dozen police officers, not over 100. It is no surprise several communities cite racism as an obstacle in the case.

A rancher found the body of Russell Turcotte along U.S. Highway 2 in North Dakota on Wednesday - He found Russell's nearly nude body lying among the trees, covered with brush, at about 10 a.m.

The Ramsey County coroner said Turcotte's body may have been at the spot since late July or early August. The sheriff declined to comment on how Russell died but said the case is being investigated as a homicide. The body was two feet into the shelter belt and partially decomposed.

There remains a $ 5,000 (US) reward from the police, and $ 50,000 (US) reward from the family, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Russ' killer.
