I don't know why it never occurred to me to do this before but here goes. When I received my grandfather's admission records from Quarrier's it also included an admission page for his two sisters. His oldest sister passed away while in the orphanage from Addison's disease. I was sent an extract from the register of deaths in the village. There are no headstones for the children but there is a large plaque mounted on the wall listing by year the names of the children that died there. Last year a kind man went and took pictures of the grounds for me as well as the section of the wall that included my grandfather's sister.

Photo courtesy of Peter Northcott WATERER, Joseph Cyril July 10th, 1913 - September 9th, 2007 My beloved husband and partner of 67 years, Joseph (known as Cyril in England), died on Sunday the 9th at home, held and supported by the arms of his daughters and I (Violet nee Zimmerman). His family legacy; 4 daughters - Erica, Dorothy, Evelyn and Gayle, Sons-in-law David and Lionel both deceased, Grandchildren Brent, Brad, Barry (and wife Lori) and Tim (and wife Tania) and Anthony (deceased), Great Grand Children - Megan, Keifer, Jonah and Olivia. Joseph was 12 and his brother, Dennis was 11 when they were sent to Canada by the Barnardo Homes in July 1926 from Preston, England. Joseph and Dennis were separated, as most brothers and sisters were, and put to work on farms that were only a few miles apart. They did not meet again until after the War when Joe, who had opened Camera Craft,in Barrie in 1946, had a job to photograph a golden wedding anniversary. While driving, fate took a hand, the fellow who drove Joe said he'd known of a lad named Waterer and he'd tell him about Joe the next time they met. On July 4th 1948, Dennis walked into the Store and they knew each other immediately. We gained a part of the family we had lost: Dennis, his wife Norma and soon their 3 sons, Dennis, Richard and Douglas. Joe was a true renaissance man. Even though he started his life as a farm worker, he educated himself, designed and made surgical garments, taught himself to play the Sax and Organ, developed and sold a patent, started a flower delivery company, studied at Ontario College of Art and painted and sold his work, entered the Army of Medical Corp. in 1940 as a Radiographer (from 1944 to 1946, and finally when demobbed opened Camera Craft where we worked from 1946 to 2000. Over the years, he made many friends of his customers who oft times would come in just to listen to the beautiful classical music he was always playing. He started the tradition of giving a Silver Dollar to newborns, when we closed the store we were the third generation of children. I wish to extend my warm and loving thanks to the following group and individuals: The Veterans Affairs Department - specifically Sonia Wakefield, Sandra McLeish who made sure that we had all the help and equipment that was needed. The CCAC - specifically, Michele and Carrie and especially Agnes, Margaret and Janet (his nurse from St. Elizabeth) without whose help and care over the past year I would have been lost. Special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Jamie Gorman. I also wish to acknowledge the amazing people at the York Fire Department, and the Paramedics, and also on the 9th the Police and Detectives who were so kind and caring. Special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Geoffrey Bond, his Physician when we lived in Barrie, his Surgeons and friends Dr. Dennis Evans and Dr. Christine Young who kept Joe walking for so long after he'd broken his ankle and leg, and to Dr. Jamie Gorman for his help that last weekend. I also wish to acknowledge the amazing people at the York Fire Department, and the Paramedics, and on the 9th the Police and Detectives who were so kind and caring. Joseph died the way he would have wanted, at home, without pain and much loved. He did not want a funeral or a big fuss but if anyone wishes, they may make a donation to the Scott Mission, or any Humane or Wildlife fund. I wish also to include one of Joe's poems: Rest When comes the night, at his behest, This weary world is hushed to rest. So close your eyes, in dreams sweet repose For where you go no one will know. YOUNGMAN, Freddie
Freddie Youngman-to Canada from England-with Barnardos. Freddie Youngman-14 years old- suffered a burst appendix and while in the Shelburne, Ontario hospital, while delirious pulled out his I.V. tubes and died of peritonitis(not sure of spelling). He is buried in a paupers grave in the Shelburne Cemetery, Dufferin County, Ontario. The family that took him in was Ellen ( Reaburn) Boyle) and she lived on the 1st line Mulmur Township near Whitfield, Ontario. Ellen died in 1913 so Freddie died before that. Her husband was Robert Boyle who died about 1907.
