INTRODUCTION & INDEX
MURDER AT PULASKI, N. Y.
December 2, 1909
The details of Jefferson County’s early murder cases provide interesting reading for those probing the historical make-up and everyday life of our county. What happened and why, being the usual pursuit of those who wrote the newspaper reports, was, in the earlier days, coupled with reporting the attitudes of the local citizens as set forth by the moral standards of the day. In some instances, the citizens were a forgiving lot.
While rambling through microfilm several months ago, I came upon the name George Eddy of Theresa, N. Y., and his involvement in a murder at Pulaski, N. Y. The name shows up in my database as a nephew to my grandfather. The locale and time period coincided. I wondered why our family had never handed down the tale. And so, I went back to the microfilm in Watertown and Pulaski and found sufficient information to know my relative wasn’t involved. A little more research enlightened me that Theresa, N. Y. had three George Eddys in the early 1900’s when this case occurred.
As I began to read the newspaper accounts of the murder which was committed on December 1, 1909, in Pulaski, N. Y., I found it quite interesting in that there was mention of many people from Jefferson County’s community of Theresa. It was then that I made my plans to provide my readers with as many of the accounts as I could find.
The George A. Eddy, who committed this murder, is found on the 1910 Census as an inmate of the Oswego County Jail. In 1920, he was working as a “hired man” for the Staplin family in the Town of Rutland. He died in November of 1952. An abstract of his obit which appeared on November 10, 1952, in the Watertown Daily Times is included in the miscellaneous Eddy items.
