On Tuesday forenoon as the Rochester express Train NO 2 approached Painted Post near Hodgman's Mill, an accident occurred by which two lives were lost, a Mrs. Robert Drake of the town of Campbell and her brothers child nearly two yrs. old. mrs. Drakes brother is a Mr. Carr of Campbell. His wife died at a relation's [ Mr. Haven] at Painted Post, and her remains were being taken to Oak Hill in Campbell for burial. As  the procession reached the crossing the advancing train was seen. The carriage containing the Minister and the Hearse crossed safely. Next came a buggy in which was Mr. Carr the husband of the deceased, his sister, Mrs. Drake, and his young child. Mr. C. was driving a spirited horse, and either  not seeing the train or misjudging distance undertook to cross. His horse sprung forward and one wheel went outside of the plank which lies against the rail. the sudden  lurch of the buggy threw out Mrs. Drake and the child upon the track. The child was run over and cut to pieces. We believe it was Mr. Drake who was in the next carriage who sprang  to rescue his wife, and he succeeded in partially dragging her off the track, but one of her feet was run over on the instep and crushed and both bones in the right limb broken near the ankle and the toes of the left foot and the outside of the foot were crushed. There was a scalp wound and a fracture or depression of the skull. She was taken to the house of Mr. E S Borland, Drs. Graves and Mills of Corning were sent for, but as no reaction took place amputation was not performed. Mrs. Drake soon recovered her consciousness and her request Rev. Mr. Branch, the Baptist Minister prayed with her. the injuries were severe that none anticipated her recovery and she died at 5 o'clock.  The remains  of the child were gathered up and buried with the body of its mother Mrs. Carr. mrs. Drake was the daughter of a Mr. Carr and old and respected farmer on Oak Hill. We do not learn that she leaves any children except a daughter five years old who is now sick with typhoid fever in Bradford. This affliction falls with terrible force upon Mr. Carr who within two days lost a wife, a child and a sister, and upon Mr. Drake whose wife was snatched from him by the relentless arm of death. [P.S.] We learn that on the friends returning from the funeral of Mrs. Drake yesterday, a lady jumped from a wagon and fractured a limb.

On Tuesday the 15th inst. a team of mules drawing a load of bark, driven by JOhn Lason of Canieteo ran away throwing the first layer of bark and MR. Lason under the forward wheels. the wheels passed over him causing his death. This accident happened between Japer and Canisteo. He had non board in the forward part of the wagon, which would have prevented it from sliding over. He was a young man about 17 yrs of age.

In 1834 and for the larger portion of the time since has resided in this town. He united with the Presbyterian Church of West Dresden Yates Co NY in 1831. Years previous he became active friends of Temperance when few besides professedly christian  people and not a majority of those braved the odium of these taking a firm stand against the use of ardent spirits.  He was one of  the earliest in this locality to adopt the Total Abolinence principle and was for a number of years one of the few earnest and active anti-slavery men in this county. enduring the reproach of being a abolitionist" in those days when free speech and free opinions  were elsewhere often checked or silenced by mobs; and where no violence was attempted, the avowal of anti slavery sentiments exposed one to business and social proscription or contempt as a "fanatic". He sought to exert an humble inaccurate n favor of morality and religion, and having been for about t38 years a firm believer in the truth of the Christian Religion, he more fully realized its value in afflictions and the infirmities of age. During his last illness of a week through not able to converse much, yet he was conscious most of the time, and fully resigned in the prospect of death. Funeral services were on tues. and burial in Hope Cemetery.
