CA 1868
The of Isaac Searls took place at Daggitt's Mills last week. Mr. Searls had hitched his mare to a rail fence and was trying to take the cold away when the mare jerked the rail from the fence, which broke in two and one end struck Mr. S in the  forehead and left him hurt. He survived the blow but a few hours.

Sheldon Chapin of Seneca Falls, died on the 5th, aged 76 yrs.

Mr. Henry C Wells a citizen of Waterloo, died in that village on Tuesday morning.

Abner Woodwoth one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Penn Yan died recently.

Death of the Hon. Mulford Northrup, of Lisle, who was in the Assembly in 1863.

J. D. Sessions a business man of Boston, formerly of Lester Brothers and Co. Binghamton, died recently.

Joseph Esty died June 20th aged 72 yrs. She[?] was on of the eldest and most useful resident of Ithaca.

Chemung co. Mrs. Marietta S Carpenter, as sister of G A Gridley of Elmira and widow of Calvin Carpenter died recently at Spencery springs.

Edwin Garlock of Elmira died suddenly from the effects of intemperance. He was formerly of the 107th volunteers.

Henry L. Bronson of Millport son in law of Wm. Viall of Elmira fell from a  fruit tree last Thursday upon his head. HE went to Elmira, Saturday on business and not feeling well went to Mr. Viels to lay down. The Advertiser says: Sleep came and rest also rest end sleep that are eternal. He neither woke nor spoke from the time of lying down, and died about nine o'clock on Saturday evening.

Calvin G Beach editor of the Orleans Republican died last Thruway evening at 8 o'clock.

Asa Sprague, one of the wealthy citizens of Rochester and formerly a prominent railroad man died at Avon on Thursday evening.

Two boys named John Conness and John M. Crandall were drowned  at Binghamton.

Tells  the following sad story of a Mr. Fox:  "Rumor" has it that a man by the name of George Fox, of Rome, Pa. and for many years known as a drover in this section, was murdered and thrown into the canal from the road in the narrows between Towanda and Standing Stone.

Thin Reaper entered one midst and removed from earthly scenes the much esteemed and venerable Benjamin Clark Sunday morning, March 24, 1912.
Mr. Clark had his eighty first birthday end his health had been declining for two yearn.
He leaves to mourn his widow, who was formerly  Matilda Howe, who  he married twenty-one years ago ad two sons, Horace of Corning, Harry of Waterbury, and one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Miller of this place.

Daniel Elliott died at the residence of his son Hobart on Oak Hill Aug. 29, 1901 where on the  Sunday following the funeral services were held, the Rev. Mr. Rice of Montour Falls, officiating. A large concourse of neighbors and friends were in attendance to pay their last dote of love and respect to One who had for many years been a prominent figure in their midst, and with many expressions of Sorrow and  regret his mortal body was tenderly laid away in Laurel Hill cemetery.
Mr. Elliott was born in Schoharie county  N. Y., November 24th, 1818,:
and was nearing his 83rd birthday when he died.  His father was George Elliott, who lived and died Schoharie county, N. Y., where where Daniel was born. He had three others brothers; George, James and Thomas all having preceded him to “that home from which no traveler returns,” and four sisters, and one only of whom, Mrs. Elizabeth VanDorn, of Burdett. survives him. Daniel left the old homestead in Schoharie in his youth, and in his early manhood married Margaret Clauherty, add purchased the farm on Foot’s Hill, north of Odessa, since known as the “Bowlby” farm.” Soon after, this farm was exchanged for a farm near Cathanine, known as the “Isaac Lyon farm,” and now owned by Washington Robertson. From this place he removed to Oak Hill, about 7 years ago, and had resided continuously in the same place until he died, his wife, Margaret, died  ten years ago. Six children were born to them; Five are still living. Owen, the second son having died in his early man hood several years ago. Hobart, the elder son, owns and resides on the old farm on Oak hill; Esther married Ira Casterline and lives in Cayuta, Maggie married a son of Herman Rumsey and lives in Enfield, Mary married George Dean and lives near Prattsburg, Steuben county, and Eva lives at Waverly, N. Y. All are present at their fathers funeral. Daniel Elliott lived a strenuous life.

[ Aug. 24, 1914]Frederick Owens passes away suddenly Monday morning, while on his way to work.
He was in business with several other men, including Frank hewitt. He left the village early in the morning  to repair the highway in the vicinity of the Fitzpatrick farm. Shortly
Shortly after leaving it began to rain when Mr. McClures bridge was reached.  Mr. Hewitt decided to wait until more favorable weather appeared more favorable. Mr. Price alighted from the  wagon and sat on the guard rail of ‘the bridge. He suddenly fell forward on the bridge and attempted to speak but he was inaudible  at the same time made his friends rushed to his assistance but to no avail as he had expired immediately. The body was taken to  Hibbards undertaking rooms where an examination was made  and  that death ‘was caused to paralysis to the heart.  He was 54 years of age.
HE was the son of Rev. John N and Nancy Huston , he was born in the town of Dix. where he followed the occupation of farming until 12 years ago when he moved to this village.  Funeral will be held at the home on  Owego St.  with Masonic rites  Thursday. HE is survived by his widow and two children, Lewis and Miss Pea----rest of clipping missing.

Died, at her horm in Moreland Tueaday, April 1, 1902, Mrs. Jane Sayler wife of A. M. Sayler, aged 81 years. She was born at, Hector, near Meckleuburg. She is survived by three sons and two daughters; HEnry and William of Moreland, Charles of Romulus, Seneca county; Mrs.  George Rumsey of Montour Falls,  and Mrs.  Ella Egan, of Moreland  Funeral services were held at the late home today (Thursday)   burial at Moreland.

Mrs. Ezra B. Sutton. Palmyra NY
 Mrs. Susan Sutton, ,wife of Ezra  B. Sutton, the ex. National League base ball player, and sister of our townsman, J.T.McKeg, died at her home in Palmyra last Friday, death resulting from severe burns she sustained several weeks ago. ‘The accident which ultimately caused. the death of Mrs. Sutton occurred on thanksgiving eve. She and her husband was seated in their library when the oil lamp exploded and most of the oil flew on to Mrs. Sutton. burning her so terribly  that it was not thought that she could survive that night.  she was given  every attention that was possible and she  seemed to grow better, but she continued to suffer greatly, and the end came last night. An unfortunate part of the accident was that Mr. Sutton, who was seated on the other side of the room, was unable to give his wife any assistance any owing  his crippled condition. he Was formerly a man of great physical strength, but since his baseball days, rheumatism has so crippled him that at times he is unable to hardly move a muscle. Mrs. Sutton  was about forty-five years of age and besides her husband is survived by one daughter, Georgiana.

Obituary
On Sunday Nov 24, 1907 at his home on South Franklin St in this village where he had lived  for nearly forty years, occurred the death of Noah Squires, his age being 77 years. He was born in England but came in early life to this country. He is survived by his wife who is a sister to the late Hiram E Pike by one daughter.Mrs.  Mrs. George Thompson and by there granddaughters.  Burial in Glenwood.

Mrs. Noah Squire died at her home in Watkins Jan. 3, 1909. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery. She was the daughter of David and Eleanor Edwards Pike who
were residents of Dix, just westward of Watkins to the southward of the Glen. Her maiden name was Melissa Pike, and she was born 1837. Two brothers Hiram Pike and Sewell Pike and one sister, Mrs. Loretta Case, have passed away. Of the family three sisters survive, Mrs. Edith Beckwith, Mrs. Pamelia Thompson, an d  Thereessa wife of George W Ganung.
She was married to Noah Squire in 1862 and were married till his death in 1907. They leave one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Thompson, and three grandchildren, Bertha, Ethel and Florence Thompson.

Leona Evans died today Nov. 2, 8 years old, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Sewall Evans of this town, died in Arnot Ogden hospital in Elmira. She had been ill at the hospital for five weeks after an operation for appendicitis from which she never recovered.

The death of Mrs. Loretta Pike Case, widow of the late Matthew  Case for many years a resident of our village occurred during the night of Tuesday, Sept. 11th at her home in Watkins her age being 77 years.
 She her sleep was  daughter of the late David Pike. , of Dix.  and had lived in that town or in our village since 1846, her husband died some ten or twelve years ago.  She had no children  but is survived by four sisters; Mrs. Noah Squires of Watkins, and Mrs. Pamelia [George]Thompson, Mrs. George W Ganung and Mrs. Albert Beckwith if Dix.  Burial in Glenwood.

Adelbert B Crout Sr. died suddenly at his home in the town of Tyrone, Wed. Nov 15,. He was born in Catlin, Chemung Co. Dec., 9, 1872 and was almost 67 yrs of age. His early age was spent around Watkins. On June 24 1900 he married  Mary Stanley of Watkins and they have lived in this vicinity. He leaves his widow, four daughters and one son, Mrs.. Hobart Masten of Geneva, Mrs. Thomas Kellogg of Burdett, mrs. maynard Doan/Dean of Montour Falls, and Adelbert Crout  of Tyrone,; five brothers, Burton Crout of Moreland, Fred Crout of Syracuse, Charles and Dean Crout of Montour Falls, and Seymour Crout of California and seven grandchildren. Funeral held Sat. at the Sargent funeral home, Dundee. Internment at Montour Falls.

Mrs. Priscilla Rowley.[nee Bump, twin to Arrilla Bump Bailey]
died  at 3;15 am today at the home of her grand nephew, Bruce Johnson of 131 East Third St, where she has resided for the past six years. Mrs. Rowley had been in poor health for some time, but has been confined to her bed for only one week. She was born in the town of Catlin July 11, 1842,, the dau. of Daniel and Sally [Cady] Bump. She married Mr. Wm. Rowley 67 years ago and moved to Portland, Oregon where they resided for many years, later moving to Post Creek, Mr. Rowley died in 1904. She is survived by three nephews, Daniel, Mark and Clarence Bump of Portland Oregon. Six Grand nephews; Bruce Johnson, Grant Johnson, George Bump, Wilson Bump, William Bump of Horseheads; four nieces, Mrs. Florence Storms, Horseheads; Mrs. Doris [nee Bailey] Crout [Chester] of Watkins;

Mr. ?  Brown was born in the town of Montour and at the time of his death was in the 45th year of his life. He was a son of V R Brown, who  survives him; also a wife and one child, three sisters and one brother, Mrs. F J. Green, of Hot Springs S D.; Miss Belle And Miss Bessie Brown of Millport, and Edward Brown of Montour. He was employed of the Northern Central Co. and previous to coming to this place was the Station Agene of the company at Phelps Junction, and for the past two years Station agent of this place.

Death of Fred HIll of South Montour died at his home on Sat. Aug. 27,1904. aged 69 yrs. He was born in Litchfield, co. Ct. Aug. 7, 1835 and resided in this town since 1882. He is survived by his wife and one son Mort. W Hill.

Mrs. M B Prince died at her home on Sat. night. She lived a few miles from town.
She was the wife of mr. M B Prince. SHe had been sick a long time. she lived in this community for 20 yrs. having come here with her husband mainly on account of her health.
She was a resident of NY state and 54 yrs. old.Two sons beside her husband survive her. Burial was in Elmwood cemetery.

Peter Wilson one of the oldest residents of Schuyler county died at the home of MIss Carrie Mettler Wed. Feb. 24, 1916. at the age of 95 yrs.  He was born near Lodi, NY Oct. 21,1821 and while a boy moved with his parents to Chemung County and afterward came to Schuyler co. where he spent the major part of his life. He last fall with his daughter, Mrs. mary Perry came to Montour Falls to spend the winter and were making their home with Miss Carrie Mettler. Mr. Wilson is survived by one son, Alvin, of Chicago, One daughter, Mrs. Mary Perry.

Charles F Wood
died at his home in Elmira Tues. Morning Feb. 15, 19116 at the age of 58 yrs.  For many years he was a resident of Montour Falls and was employed by t he Sheapard Electric Crane and Hoist co. Last march he and his wife moved to Elmira but continued to work here.
He was sticken with pleurisy. He is survived by his widow, one son Mrs. O H Wood and one grandson, Richard all of Elmira; two sisters Mrs. L W. May and Mrs. C J. Hubbard of Painted Post and one brother Benson Wood of Olean NY.

Mrs. Ann barber wife of Samuel Barber died in Millport Feb. 20, 1916. The funeral was held Wed. afternoon at the Methodist church, Millport. Burial was in Pine Valley cemetery.

Charles Jobbitt of Penn Yan formerly of this village died at his home Tues. night of pneumonia aged 37 yrs.  Two weeks ago he slipped while in the Sherman house, Penn Yan, and fell on the oily floor, severely straining his left lung. He took cold which resulted into pneumonia. He is survived by his father and mother Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jobbitt, both of Penn Yan. The deceased was a member of the Minnesetha lodge No 235, Knights o  f Pythias and Yates Tent. No 88, K O T M of Penn Yan, and the Hydrant Hose co. of Penn Yan.
He has been engaged in the bottling business in Penn Yan being the agent for the Genesee Brewing Co. and the Bartholomay Brewing co of rochester. Funeral was held in Penn Yan and burial was there.

Elizabeth Hitchcock died in Rochester June 11, 1890. She had undergone a operation for removal of a tumor. Funeral was conducted at the home of her ? sister, Mrs. Sarah Rogers of this village, by Rev. P K Sheldon. She was laid to rest in Glenwood.
She was born in Dix Nov. 17th 1836 and had been a life long resident. She leaves an aged mother, three sisters and two brothers. Her sisters, Mrs. Sarah Rogers and Mrs. Nancy Whitlock of Watkins. and Mrs. Sewell Pike of havana. She made her home with Mrs. Rogers since 18 yrs of age. She was a member of the Baptist church in Coopers Plains, Steuben co. and later transferred her membership to the church at wAtkins.

Mr. Tum was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Tum who were early residents of the town of Montour. He is survived by a his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Briggs of Rochester, one sister  Mrs. L N Stoddard.

At Centerville in the town of Corning, Dec. 6th George Wm. Miller, aged 5yrs. and ten months. He was the son of Valentine Millier of Elmira formerly of Centerville.

In Washington D C Dec. 7th Mrs. Olive Rockwell Wheelock wife of Marcus M. Wheelock formerly of Corning aged 50 yrs. Many friends in this village and in Otsego co will be pained by her death. She was the sister of Mrs. L H. Robinson of Corning,[ wife of Deacon robinson, deceased]

Miss Lelia F Henry a former resident of this village died in Cortland, NY Jan 30 1891. Casket was moved to the house of Mrs. Helen Skellenger.

The death of William Henry Jackson, occurred at the home of Mrs. Rachel Weed, july 14th in the 74th year of his age. He was the son of the late Hon. Wm. T Jackson and was born in Elmira 1830, where he lived until five years of age when his parents removed to Havana.. HE spent most of his life in this village, except when he was in Winona Minn. and NY city.  He was of a family of 14 children  only one of whom survive, HIram b Jackson from whose home the funeral will be held.  Burial in family plot in Montour Cemetery.

the sudden death of Mrs. George D Brown on sunday last shocked our citizens. she underwent a operation for a tumor  on Friday. She could not rally after the effects of the surgery. She was 42 yrs of age.

tracy C Ford died at his home in Catharine June 17, after a long illness, aged of 53 yrs.

Herman O Chambers  died in Elmira [Apr. 10, 1903 paper]. He was the manager of the Elmira Paint co and while engaged in mixing paint in the shop suddenly dropped dead. HE was a former resident of this village.  he is survived by his wife and two sons, Frank M of Denver Co. and C C of Binghamton.

Abigail Bolt wife of Wm. Skinner died at her home on Main St. in this village  Dec. 4, 1900. She was born in Reading NY Aug. 27, 1833. She was the favorite among several children in her fathers home. Jan. 1, 1856 she married Wm. Skinner.  A few years of married life was spent in Mich. the remainder in this section. Besides her husband she leaves her son Edward D and a little daughter previously died. She is survived by two sisters and one brother.

Rev. Hiram Ward Congdon died in Wyoming NY. HE served the Presbyterian church in this village form 1875 to 1878 and will be remembered by the older citizens here and also at Moreland .

Died at his home in this village Feb. 16, Israel W Jacob's in the 59th yrs of his age. He as born in Pa. and had resided in this place about one year. He is survived by his widow and seven children, viz.: S S Jacob's, Milton, Pa.; amanda Jacob's and mrs. J C McLaughlin, Jerry Shore[Jersey shore?] Pa. B B Jacobs, Miss Eliza Jacobs and Miss Henriettta Jacobs, Montour Falls, NY.

Calvin Thomas
Died in this village Sat. June 25, 1904, aged 64 yrs as nearly as can be determined. He was born a slave down in the glades of Louisiana, and as such grew to manhood without the advantage of any education, except that which he derived from hard toil. He remained a slave until liberated by the pen of Abraham Lincoln, an soon after enlisted in the service of the United States, in which he remained until the close of the civil war. He became a favorite o f his colonel by whom he as induced to come north, stopping first at Pultney, Steuben Co. About 35 yrs ago he came to Montour Falls, married and had resided here ever since. Before he was liberated he as converted became a firm believer in Christ and every day was to him a trying reality. Every one who met  him became convinced of the sincerity and earnestness of his faith and the strength of his convictions. He united with the Baptist church when coming here. He married the second time six years ago to Mrs. Jane A Duffin of Geneva, who survives him.

 Mrs. I  J Dennis died at her home in this village apr. 14th. She recently returned from Kingston NY and thought to be slowly improving up to the day of her death. She was a native of Himrods, Yates CO and  was about 58 yrs old. Previous to moving to this village she had resided in Elmira and Horseheads. she leaves a husband and two daughters, Mrs. George Brooks of Elmira, and Mrs. F D Wicker of this village. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in that city

Death of Calvin Spaulding arrived by telegram to Mr. S J. Brown. HE died at Locke, Cayuga co NY. Mr. Spaulding resided in this village for many years where he conducted a merchant tailoring business which he gave up a few years ago on account of failing health. He went to live with relatives at Locke. Remains were brought here for burial.

Temperance Austin widow of the late Asa Austin of Dix occurred at the home of her son, Otis E Austin of this village. She suffered a stroke las week and never railed. She was in her 79th year of age. Since the death of he husband 17 yrs ago she had made her home with her son in this village. She leaves three sons and three daughters, George Austin, d J Austin, Mrs. Dewit Cronk an d Mrs. E J Prince of Dix, Mrs. Luther Bailer and O E Austin of this village.  Burial was in Montour Falls. cemetery.

Donald P Mann a long time  resident of Watkins died at his home in Memphis, Tenn. on March 15, 1913. Mr. Mann  was a son of the Late Rev. Duncan C Mann and Caroline Brother Mann who were for so many  years closely identified with the life of this village. He was born in Catharine on Dec. 10, 1862 but spent most of his boyhood was Watkins. HE was a graduate of Cook Academy and with honors from Hobart College with the class of 1883. HE taught classes at Westchester NY and in the fall of 1884 entered the field of Journalism as a member of the staff of the Kansas city Journal. He than worked for the Kansas City  Chapman Dewey Lumber co. He was married Apr. 25, 1906. to Madaline Hildreth of Herkimer NY  who with a son and daughter survive him. Internment was in Glenwood Cem. Watkins.

Corning March. 5, 1914 Truman S Pritchard Cornings oldest business man died at his home here yesterday after a life of unusual activity aged 76 yrs. He was a brother of Albert Pritchard of 171 West Pultney St. Corning who died last week Thurday at the age of 67  and who was buried on Sat. Mr. Pritchard for 51 yrs had conducted a hardware  store in Corning in the same building. In the old canal days he served for four years as collector of ht the port of Corning.

The death of E D Hill of this village took place on Apr. 19th. funeral services were held and attend fro his late home Apr. 22d. the burial was in Montour cemetery. Ereasmus Darwin HIlls was born in Brookfield Madison co NY Nov 12, 1838, and was a carpenter. His 12th year he went ot Oswego NY and engaged in carpentering. He soon exchanged this for wagon making. He graduated from the Medical Dept. of the University of Buffalo in 1867. He engaged in the practice of his profession at Schuyler Lake and Burlington, Otsego county for a short time, finally taking up residence at Burlington Flats. He moved to this village after failing health, but where he engaged in the drug business for 4 years.. He was twice married in Feb. 1862 to Miss L Adelia Sloane sister of Hon. Charles A Sloane, Mrs. M L Stockley and Mrs. Wm. H Shepard all of Montour Falls, and in Aug. 1875 he was again married to Miss Lillie M. rose of Exeter NY who survives him.

Mrs. Seth Hill died at the age of 80 yrs. she passed away at the home of her son in law, Mr. chester Giles, Sat. Oct. 4, she was born in town of Reading in 1822, her maiden name being Maria Holliaster. In 1839 she was married  to Mr. Set Hill and with her husband had resided in this village 46 years. She is survived by her aged husband, one son, Mr. Reynolds Hill, of Geneva, and two daughters, Mrs.. Chester Giles and Miss Maude HIll of this village. Internment was in Montour cemetery.

Lieut. Lewis G Dudley formerly of Addison died at Praire Ducheien Wis.. June 10, aged 35 yrs.

James M Dunham died at his home in this village Wed. Jan. 23rd. He was born in Burdett on Dec. 11, 1815
HE was the son of Azariah Dunham. a brother Johnson A dunham resides at Grand Rapids Mich. At an early day he kept the Washington House and conducted a daily line house of stages, fro Ithaca to Bath. In apr. 1855 he came to this village and engaged in boat building and also bough stock for the NY market. In 1863 with his son Eli a he conducted a meat market and operated a woolen mill.  IN 1866 he with his two sons Eli, and herman bought the Decker Flouring milll. His wife was Jane A Searles and she died about 9 yrs ago. he leaves one son Eli and several grand children and great grand children.

Mrs. a M .Durand. died occurring at the home of her sister, Mrs. LeGrand couch in Odessa on Sat. June 20, 1903 after a long illness. she was 33 yrs of age.  She was the oldest daughter of Frank Stanley. she married to Milo Almbert Durand of NY city, Dec. 23, 1902 at St. JOhns Church. Catharine. Since than she resided in NY city until a few weeks ago. She was left a few years ago with a widowed father and a younger sister, she made home pleasant for the. She was known as Nellie.

Rev. Noble Palmer died in St. Paul Minn. at the home of his son T R Palmer May 4,1903. HE was 80 yrs old. He was brought here for burial in Montour cemetery. He was born at Morris Otsego Co NY July 15, 1823. He was married to Amelia Ruggles daughter of Timothy and Susan Ruggles of Harpeerville Broome Co NY Aug. 22, 1828. His wife died Feb.15, 1882. Seven children were born to Rev. and MRs. Palmer, four of whom survive him, Mrs. charles J Doolittle of Lake City, Min, Mrs. Alice P Whittemore of Ithaca NY; T R Palmer of St. Paul and Albert B Palmer of Montour Falls Ny.

Rev.  A L. Freeman
Ontario county Journal Oct. 3d reported the death of Rev. A L Freeman of Canandaigua, father of Mrs.. Frank L MIller of North Hector. He was found death on Monday in the home of a sister, with whom he had been  s pending a few days. Apoplexy claimed him during the night.

Died at her home in Odessa NY Feb. 27, 1905 Ruth Sawyer Reed widow of the late Marvin Reed in the 58th yrs of her age.  Remains are three brothers and one sister to mourn their loss. Orvinza, and Allen of Saginaw Mich. and Eugene and Hannah of Odessa NY.

Died at the family home eon college Ave. Feb. 20th Etheline wife of Andrew B Lamoreoux, aged 24 yrs.
Burial in Canisteo the birthplace of the deceased. She is survived by her husband and two children.

Sept. 14
Peter O'Dea died Sept. 14, at  the age of 76 yrs. He was born in County  Clare, Ireland and been a resident of this village for 52 yrs. His funeral was held in St Mary's church Watkins. He is survived by one son and two daughters and one grandson.
The second death this week  was Mrs. mary E Weaver, widow of the later Myron H Weaver Sept. 15 at the age of 80 yrs. He has been a resident of this village for many yeas. S he is survived by three sons, George Dwight, and Duncan. Her funeral as held at her home.  Burial in Montour cemetery.
