THE ELMIRA WEEKLY ADVERTISER AND CHEMUNG COUNTY REPUBLICAN

What will follow are the lists so graciously transcribed by Isabel
Lydell. Helena Howard had in her possession the two three ring note
books of these listings of deaths and marriages transcribed by Isabell.
She graciously gave them to me for adding to the twin tiers site.
The dates of these listings will be 1830 through 1867. She must
have spent hours and months recording and typing these listings.Through
her work you may be able to find someone you have thus far thought was
lost.
I have scanned the pages than used OCR and made the corrections
as seen. This was to make as few mistakes as possible.

OBITUARY POETRY: No real sorrow is displayed by the tacking of doggeral to funeral announcements. Such poetical grief is merely disgusting although vulgar minds may regard it as “touching” and impressive. ‘the grave is not the place for the display of extravagant nonsense, and those who indulge in the latter over the dead bodies of their relitives, are justly to be suspected of harboring more vanity than anguish.” hew York Ledger.

into all their joys and sorrows. In the family for which the past thirty
years she has been domesticated, she was warmly beloved and appreciated,
and has left a gap not easily filled. As her honorable and successful life
drew to a close, she prepared herself with calmness and self possession
for the final conflict, leaving with her many friends the sweet assurance
she had passed to a glorious immortality. Wellsburgh, December 2kth, 1860.
