DEATHS PAGE 5
MARRIAGE AND DEATH RECORDS PUBLISHED IN THE ELMIRA GAZETTEER, 1835 — 1845.
“The Investigator” was commenced at Elmira,
Tioga (now Chemung) county, New York in 1820, by Job A, Smith. In 1828
its name was changed to “The Tioga Register”, and in 1828 to “The Elmira Gazettere, and its publication was continued by Mr. Smith until 1831. It was successively issued by Brinton Paine, Cyrus Pratt, Pratt & Irad Beardsley, Mason & Win, C. Rhoades, George 14. Mason and William 0.Mason until 1857 when it passed into the hands of S.C. Faber, by whom it is still published (1860). Historical and Statistical Gazetteer of New York State, J.H.French, L.L.D., 1861.
Marriage and death notices have been extracted, copied exactly as printed, from September 25, 1835 to December 25, 1845. It must be remembered that all marriages and deaths which occurred during this period of time were not published, only the information which was contributed to the editors, This listing was made because it may be that these published notices may be the only existing record of the events, and could be helpful to those doing genealogical research in the Twin Tiers of New York and Pennsylvania. Apparently the spelling of the name of the village north and west of Elmira had not yet been established. The name appears as Bigflatt, Big Flat and as now Big Flatts. Horseheads was called Fairport (an interesting story here, but not a part of this compilation), and Southport as all of that part of the present city of Elmira south of the Chemung River and the present town of Southport. The towns of Dix, Catharine and Cayuta are
now in Schuyler County. Hector, Tompkins county, is now in Schuyler county. The village of Jefferson is now Watkins Glen and Havana is Montour Falls.Although started in 1828, the only existing copies of the newspapers are on microfilm. These films, starting with the September 25, 1835 issue, are on file in the Steele Memorial Library Reference Department, Elmira, New York.
