He was, says the Washington County Post, one of the earliest settlers. He was frequently called out during the Revolutionary War and rendered efficient service to his country.

DIED In Fairport on the 12th inst., Benjamin Cuykendall, a patriot of the Revolution, age 88 years.
(Note:— A village north of Elmira, NY .as incorporated May 15, 1837,
as “Fair Port”, probably as it was located at the junction of the feeder
canal from Corning and the Chemung canal running north from the Chemung
River to Seneca Lake • Its name was changed back to Horseheads” April
12, 1845. The name originated when, after the Revolution, the skulls
of General Sullivans horses, no longer needed and disposed of at
this site after the expedition into central New York, were found
and put up on poles along the road )

In this town on Sunday night last, Wilkes Jenkins, aged about 71 yrs., one of the oldest inhabitants of this town.
Fatal Accident Mr. Christopher Leefler of Seeley Creek waas killed
on the 2nd inst. He was thrown from his wagon, the wheels of which passed
over his body, and caused his death in a few hours. His age was about 53.

In this village, Wednesday the 25th ult, Miss Matilda, daughter
of Elisha Briggs, in the 31st year of her age.
Died Near this village on the 6th inst., Major General Mathew Carpenter,
age 80 -sears. Gen. Carpenter was one of the early settlers of this county,
to which ha removed in the year 1793. He was appointed clerk of the county
of Tioga in January 1792 .by Governor George Clinton, which office he held
until 1819. He was several times elected to the Assembly from the county
of Tioga, ‘was an Elector of President and Vice President, and a member
of the conviction which formed the amended constitution of the State of
New York. me was a member of the old Republican party of ‘98 and continued
firm and unwavering in the same political sentiments to the hour of his
death. Solomon Southwick, in speaking of an interview with
him in 1836, says “He is the same inflexible Republican now
that he was than (1798), and what is still more gratifying to the writer,
because of his misfortunes,
which is far from being light hence, with that fortitude which
is the offspring of true dignity of mind.”
Died In this village, on Tuesday evening, October 15, after a short illness , Mrs. Amira, wife of Mr. Robert H. Thompson, and daughter of the late Major Gen. Mathew Carpenter.

of the late Jonathan Stoddard Conkling, Esq., aged 75 years, one month
and nine days. Mrs. Conkling, with her husband emigrated to this county
from the county of Orange about 50 years ago, Through a long life she has
maintained an uniform religious character, and died as she lived, firm
in the hope of a well grounded interest in the Savior’s merits.

DIED In Wellsville, Alleganv Co., on the 17th ult., Mr. Nathan Sayre,
aged 92 and eleven months. Mr. Sayre was a soldier of the Revolution and
formerly lived in Elizabethtown, N.J., but for many years has been a resident
of Southport, in this county. He died a firm believer in the Christian
faith, and in the full hope of happiness in the world to come.

at this place. Age 54 years.”
On Monday, the 4th inst., in the town of Chemung, Mr. Henry Woodhouse, in the 81st year of his age. Mr. Woodhouse was a soldier in the Revolution and served his country both on sea and land.

Suddenly, in this village, on the 1st inst., Mary, wife of Ingham Beaumont, in the 41st year of her age. (Deceased a native of Yorkshire, England—had resided in this village for the last 10 years.)

Died In this village, on the 9th inst., Mr. P. H. Wells, aged about
50 years
At his residence in the town of Catlin, in this county, on the 8th
of November last, Capt. Samuel Shoemaker, in the 83d year of his
age. Capt. Shoemaker was an officer of the Revolution,
and during the war resided on the Delaware River on the frontiers
of Pennsylvania. During the latter years of his life, Mr. Shoemaker received
a pension from the government, and also from the State of Pennsylvania.
At the last annual election, Mr. Shoemaker attended the rolls, and cast
his vote, as usual, to sustain the Democratic cause. From this over exertion
took a violent cold, which soon terminated his existance.
Died In this village, on the 13th inst., Betsy Laury, wife of John
L. Shockey and eldest daughter of the late John Saunders, in the
37th year of her age.
