Faulk, William, treasurer and general manager of the La France Fire Engine Company was born in Prussia, November 25, 1837. And came to the United States in 1857, located in New York City. A year later he entered the regular army as private of Company F, Second Regiment Infantry, and was promoted through the various grades to sergeant major. After the battle of Antietarn, Md, he was commissioned a Lieutenant in his regiment and a few months later a first lieutenant. At the battle Of Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 10,1864, he received a severe gunshot Wound through the left lung, disabling him for the rest of the war. In 1866 he was Promoted a captain, and for gallant services during the battles of Chancelorsville and
Spotsylvania Court House, Va., he received the three brevets of captain, major, and lieutenant colonel. After the close of the war Colonel Falck was stationed in the South, taking active part in that reconstruction of that section in 1877 he was sent. His regiment to Idaho; taking part in the campaign against the Nez. Perces In 1883 owing to disability incurred the line of duty, of exposure and wounds; Colonel Falck was placed on the retired. List. In 1867 colonel Falck, while stationed in Elmira on recruiting service, renewed his acquaintance with Miss Mary Bradford McQuahae, of that city, marrying her in Ju1y of that year.  His wife was his Companion during the sixteen years of army service subsequent to the war and until his retirement retirement, after which Colonel Falck settled in Elmira and became connected The LaFrance Fire Engine Co. He was the manager until 1885.  He is an honorary member of the thirtieth separate Company of the G. A. R; colonel and Mrs. Falck have two sons.

Farrington, E. W. The firebrick and stoneware Business conducted by Mr. Farrington was founded by Walters  & Farrington (James father of E. W) in 1865 and about ten years later Mr. Everard succeeded Mr. Walters, the a style being changed to Farrington & Everard. This continued until 1851 when Everard Died and the firm name became T. B. Farrington & Co by the addition of Mr. Farrington a At the death of the senior Farmington in July, 1887, the business was assumed by E. W., who has since conducted it. Mr. Farrington was born in Havana NY, December 25, 1855 was educated at the schools of Elmira for over ten years, was engaged with the Advertiser mailing department and finally became bookkeeper and later was money clerk in the post office during Postmaster D F. Pickermg as administration. . Mr. Farrngton married, in Elmira, a daughter of Thomas Gerity, in October 1879, and they have one child.

Fassett, Newton attorney and counselor at law was born in Bradford County, Pa. Nov. 26, 1822, and was educated in the Pennsylvania public schools and the Elmira and Canandaigua Academies. At the age of about twenty five he began the study of law in Elmira with judge Konkle and followed it later with Judge, Brooks and the law was born Otsego County He was admitted to the bar in 1849 at Norwich N. Y., and entered at office into practice in Elmira. In 1850 he was associated with Archibald Robinson. In 1861 H Boardman came into the firm and Smith Robertson and Fassett at once took and for many years held the front rank of law firms in the southern tier.  Mr. Robertson, died 1880 and Mr. Smith was soon placed on the supreme bench. Mr. Fassett a manifold business and other duties that he could not give much attention to his profession.  Mrs. Fassett was a Miss Sloat of Rockland CO.  Of their three sons, J. sloat is the well known State senator; Henry L is a wholesale grocer’ and Truman E is a contractor and manufacturer.

Fetherman, Jacob born May 18, 1844, was educated in the public schools and in an employed on the Northern Central Railroad. In 1867 he was promoted engineer and left the company an abort time, but returned to the same position. In 12, which he still holds. March 26, 1869, he married Almira B., daughter of Lewis and Emily Heed, of New Jersey. They have five children: Elwood born August 1870; Emily, born November 4 1872 Hattie B., born March 13, 1875; Edgar G., born March 21, 1881; and Martha A., born July .12, 1887. Philip, father of Jacob, was born in Monroe County, Pa., about 1807.  He married Elizabeth Eckard and had born sons and one daughter viz: Lewis, John J., Jacob, Susan and Franklin B.

Finely, John was born in Dunbartsonshire, Scotland, November 26, 1833, and was in the public schools. June 20, 1856, he married Catherine Muir, by whom seven children: James, John jr., William M. Margaret O., Robert, Francis G, and one who died in infancy. In April 1869, the family came to the United Staten and located in Elmira, N. Y. Mr. Finlay has been in the employ of the Northern Central
Railroad Company twenty-one years and a locomotive engineer for eighteen years. John Finlay Jr., it. Was born in the old home in Scotland, November 28, 1860 and is a graduate of the Elmira free Academy. He entered the employee of the northern central July 1880. Was promoted to the position of engineer 1887. He married Nov. 29, 1881 Mattie L. only daughter of Wm. and Martha L. Teal of Elmira.  They have three children: Willie T. who died at the age of five yrs.  and Lester W and Grace L who survive.

Fitch, Arthur S the Chemung co clerk and the present secretary of the Elmira Mechanics society was born in Elmira 1857 and died in 1886 aged 74 yrs. HE reared three sons of whom the eldest was a lieutenant in the one hundred and sixty first Reg. NY Vol.  And was killed in the Red River expedition. The Lewis Edgar Fitch G AN R Post in Elmira was named
For him, Albert K. is a merchant in Parsons, Kansas, Arthur S. Fitch in early life clerked in a grocery store, and in July, 181862 enlisted at Elmira in co. B. One Hundred and Seventh Reg. NY vol. serving till June 19, 1865
 being discharged a first lieutenant and brevry captain.  Returning to Elmira he clerked for Hill Brothers, booksellers, till 187l when he engaged in partnership with Mr. Dumars und the firm name of Fitch & Dumars which later was changed to A. S. Fitch, and still later to Fitch and Billings. He retired from he latter in 1889.

Fitch Francis Ellery descendant of Thomas Fitch who was born in Bocking, Essex, England, came to this country in 1638. Settling at Norwalk Conn.  He was the father of Thomas Fitch who died in that place in 1684, and left a son Thomas, was born in 1665. This last Thomas was the father of James Fitch, who was born in 1700, and he was the father at Elijah Sr., who was married in 1752. His son, Elijah, Jr. was born in 1773, married in 1793 Mary Olmsted. In 1799 they moved to Cooperstown, Otsego Co., NY.  1831 the family came to Troy Pa. Stephen H Fitch the father of Francis E. was born in Cooperstown NY Feb. 25, 1814. and in 1839 he married Lucinia the daughter of Thomas and Betsey Manley of East Canton, Bradford Co. Pa. The brothers Stephen H. were Lewis H., Thomas N., Andrew M., Curtis T. and Horace H. The sisters were Sarah, Amarilla T., Lydia, and Hannah. Francis Ellery Fitch married, February 9, 1864, Julia A., daughter of Caleb S.  and Jane B. Burt, of Springfield, Bradford County, Pa. They have had five children, of whom three girls died in infancy. The others are Burt S., born March 6, 1865; Nellie G. (adopted), born August 22, 1869; and Francis Ellery, jr., born December 27. 1884. Mr. Fitch entered the service of the Williamsport and Elmira Railway. Company et November, 1855, as telegraph operator at Troy, Pa., was made train dispatcher Jan. 1, 1864, and in 1872 was made trainmaster for the Northern Central Railway Co. at Elmira which position he now holds.

Flinsbach, Gottlob, a native of Wurtemberg, Germany, was born on June 13 1849, and came to the United States in 1868, locating first in New York city. He was married twice, first, November 27, 1879, to Eliza Snyder, of New York city and of German descent. They had one, daughter who died in infancy. For his second wife Mr. Flinsback married, June11, 1882 Mary M. Kopf. Who was born in New York City and by whom he had one daughter, Johanna .M., born. June 16, 1883. Mr. Finsbach has a bakery on East Church Street.  Elmira.
Flood Frank Dr. Was born in Seneca County, N. Y in September, 1851 a son of the late James Flood who died in Geneva in 1884, aged fifty-eight. Dr. Frank H. was given a collegiate education and graduated from the Medical Department of the University of the city in New York, February 20, 1873. , He practiced in Seneca County 1855 when account of ill health he made a journey on horseback through the West. spent in about a year and a half. He located in Elmira in December, 1887 when he took up general practice again. He married March 1888 Deliliah R. Choate.

Flood, Henry was born in Lodi, Seneca County, N. Y., in 1853. He graduated Elmira Academy in 1871, read medicine with his father, Patrick H., and graduated from Bellevue Hospital College, New York-city, in 1874. He was in Vienna Austria, in 1878—79 in the  College at Physicians and Surgeons in New York City in 1889—90. He began at once the practice of medicine in Elmira and has been engaged in it since. He was surgeon for the Erie sod Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroads, -and medical examiner for several insurance. HE was the inventor of the anesthetic inhaler, etc. He married Elmira Jan. 1, 1881 to a daughter of John C. Seeley.

Forseman, Henry P born in Easton, P, July 20, 1841, was educated in Wyoming Kingston Pa. He enlisted October 2, 1861 in. Company K, 52nd Infantry Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served two year, being discharged on surgeons certificate of disability. In 1864 he entered the emp1oy of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroads.
In 1879 was promoted engineer. August 12, 1881 he married Helen Herlily of Scott, Pa.   They resided in Elmira ten years; His father, Thomas M.D., was born in Pennsylvania about 1810. He married Martha Parker, of New Jersey, by whom they had two children.  John and Heury P.

Foster William father of Mary B. was born in Smithfield R, I in 1780. The family is of English decent.    Mr. Foster came with his parents to Elmira about 1841. HE was by occupation a manufacturer in Rhode Island. by occupation a cotton manufacturer in Rhode Island At his new Home he purchased a farm just above the water works on West Water Street and engaged in farming. He died August 5, 1864, and his wife August 23, 1870. Mary E. resides on the homestead.

Freeman, William C., born at Brantford, Ontario, Canada, July 24,1853, was educated in Toronto in Upper Canada College and graduated from Trinity Medical
College in Toronto in 1876; He is a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. After a season at Bellevue he began practice hi Canada, where he remained three years. Thence he went to Muskegon, Mich., practicing there seven-years making a specialty of chronic diseases. He came to Elmira in- August 1888, A he established himself as a general practitioner. He married, in Canada in of the late Thomas- Scott, for twelve years a Member of Parliament. They have one daughter.

Frost, Eli Couch is the youngest son of Joseph Frost of Reading, Conn. His father was born there May 22, 1754, married Sept. 19, 1782, Lucy Couch who was born March 12, 1760. They had ten children and moved to Catherine, Tioga Co .NY. Mr. Frost was a soldier in the Rev. War. Eli C. Frost was born in Catherine NY.  May 1, 1808 and educated in the pioneer schools. He married twice, first, Nov. 17, 1831, Melinda Meeker, who bore him these children; Amanda M., Harriet a., Eli C, and Helen M. Mrs. Frost died Oct. 15, 1853. He married second wife on March 2, 1854, Sarah R McConnell of Montreal, Canada, by whom he has had six children. Of this family the following survive. Florus H. born Aug. 24, 1855, Fannie M. b. April 22, 1868, Flora V. born Nov. 19, 1870; and Mabel M. born April 6, 1874. Colonel Frost moved to Watkins, Schuyler co NY in 1865. He built the Glen Park Hotel and conducted it for three years. IN 1876 he came to Elmira and is now holds patents on ovens and hotel ranges.
 

Furhrman, Martin born Carroll co. Md. March 4, 1844 was educated in the public schools of Cumberland co Pa. He married April 25, 1866 Margaret J daughter of Josiah and Susannah Kennedy of Perry co. Pa. Their three children are Harry K. born Sept 1, 1867; Bessie born Sept 24 1869’ and Isabel Born Aug. 4, 1878. Mr. Fuhrman has been in the employ of the northern Central RR Co.  As conductor and yardmaster for several years. He enlisted twice in co. K o158 Pa. Vol. and was honorable discharged Aug. 12, 1863 and second Sept 2 1864 in co. F 280 Pa. Infantry Vol.  as second Sgt.. His father Steven was born on the borderline of Pa. and Maryland. . In 1814 he married Margaret Hoffman. They had four children, Theodore, martin Sarah and Mary M.
 

Galantian, Andrew Bedford, justice of the peace and acting recorder of the city of Elmira was born in Walden Orange Co NY June 20, 1825 and is a son of John I Galatian a woolen manufacturer and mill owner at that place who died at Walden in 1829 aged 35 years. Andrew graduated from Plainfield Green Brook Family School in Plainfield. NJ.  HE read law at Newburgh NY with the late Judge Fullerton, of NY city and spent five years in his office. He moved to Elmira 1851.
1856 he was elected justice of the peace and has been re elected a number of times. He purchased the Wellsville Free Press and moved to Andover, Allegany co NY and ran it as Republican paper. He moved it to Horseheads as the Horseheads Free press about one year. He than moved it to Elmira and started the first Sunday paper in that place. The Elmira Sunday Herald.  The first issues sold about 3000 copies. He married twice. He has two sons and three daughters. One son, George H. the eldest is a traveling salesman and John A a law student. George H. was in the Treasury Dept. during the Cleveland's Administration.

Gaylord, Henderson, junior member of the parliament law firm of Baxter, Gibson & Gaylord, was born in Plymouth, Pa., July 20,1862. His father was Capt Asher Gaylord, Company D, One Hunted and Forty-third Pennsylvania Regiment, who was killed at Hatchers Run VA.  January 7, 1865, after serving his country in the field for over three years: Henderson Gaylord received about twenty years of age began the study law in the office of Smith, & Fassett, of Elmira. In 1887 he was admitted to the bar, and in Jan 1889, entered partnership.

Gerber, Charles Jr. was born in Buffalo in 1853. He part of his education  In the public schools of that city. Afterwards being sent to Germany where he received an academic course at Worms in Hesse Darmstadt, and in Frieberg, Baden. After two years he returned to Buffalo; taking over his father‘s brewery until 1879, When he came to Elmira, established the Manor Brewery which was burned in 1880.  He then established himself in the Mander brewery Which he leased and operated two years. In 1882 his own brewery was Rebuilt. He manufactures about 5,000 barrels per year. September 25, 1879 He married Nellie M. oldest daughter of William and Elizabeth Wood, Of his native city they have four children: Charles W., born July24 1880; Florence E., born October 26 1881; Nellie K born June 1, 1884 and Albert H, born December 1, 1890. Mr. Gerber’s father was born In Baden, Germany, and married Amelis Noble, by whom he had four Children, three of who now living, Josephine, Minnie, and Charles ,jr

Gibson, Judson a member of the law firm of Baxter Gibson & Gaylord, is a native Of Chenango County N. Y., being born there on August 16, 1857. He was educated at The Cazenovia (N Y) Seminary, read law with Messrs. Smith & Fassett, of Elmira and was admitted to the bar 1885. He came into his present co-partnership in 1888, And Mr. Gibson equally shares the high standing of the firm as on it individual. He is an ardent, active Republican, a member of the County Central Committee and  Was the party’s candidate for district attorney in 1889. He married at Cazenovia in 1882 to Miss Hannah G. Pierce, and they have two children.

Giles, Henry father of William E., born in Orange Co.  NY.  He came to Horseheads In 1846, and was a contractor and builder by occupation. In 1833 he married Mary Leach Who bore him eight children, namely: Amos, William E., Uriah S., Edmund M.  M., Mary Lewis and Julia. The latter died in infancy. William E. Giles, born in Southport, N Y. Feb. 12,1841, was educated in the public schools and became a printer. He served in Co. C. 141 Inf. N Y Vol. 1859 with his brother published the first Horseheads Journal. Aug. 23, 1865 he married Mary E. Brown of Elmira. He resides on Madison Ave.

Silas Gleaaon, a founder of the Gleason and Sanitarium known as Elmira Water cure was born in Colerain mass. Nov. 3, 1865, a son of Silas Gleason. He was a farmer who moved to Vt. in 1823 where he died about 1870 at the age of 64.
He established in Allegany County in. 1847 established the third Water Cure in the United States, remaining there two years. He married 1844 Miss Rachel Brooks daughter of Reuben Brooks. They have two children, E. B. a son and daughter Adele A.

 John Godwin, father of Clarence was born Theresa Drake by whom he had seven Children, five of whom are living. Clarence B., Egbert H, who resides in Chemung; Gertrude E wife of George Harris of Elmira; Clara, wife of James Harrington of Chemung; and Granville B. who resides in Southport. Clarence b. was born in the town of Elmira Apr. 29, 1834; He has been a miller for 26 yrs. Aug. 22, 1860 he married Phebe daughter of George an d Lillas Lowman of Chemung by whom he has two children; Hoveey H born Nov. 19, 1861 and Hattie E. born March 1, 1863. Gorman, Thomas was born in Ireland 1889, came to America 1839.  Came to America and moved to Elmira where he was in the railroad business. He married in Elmira 1862 Anastasia Nealson.

Greatsinger, Christian, the father of John S., was born in Ulster County, N. Y., Nov. 21, 1792, and was a Methodist clergyman. He married Anna M. Smith,
Oct. 30, 1816. She was born February 6, 1799. They had four children: Eliza, Rhoda, John S., and William S.  John S. Greatsinger, born on the homestead October 7, 1848,ran educated in the public schools and in Lima Seminary, and is a farmer. March 8, 1848, he married Aurelia 0. Bosworth, who was born in Athens, Pa., November 12, 1823.  They had four children: Jacob L., born July 1, 1849, who married Kittie (Da1ey) Francis; John W., born October 13, 1851, who married Emma Goldsmith, of Elmira; Sarah E. born December 25. 1858, who married B. F. Keeler (deceased); and Fanny, born March 29, 1861, who married John B. Keeler, of Horseheads. The family is of Irish and English extraction.

Greener, Jacob who was born in Worms, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, February 25, 1825, received a common school education, and early began the study of music. Arriving in America in 1846 he first located in New York, where he remained for six an half years, and came to Elmira in 1855. In July 1848, he married Theresa Hay, of Germany, who bore him four children: Sophia B., Charles G., Laura, and Augustus. Laura Greener married George Dullin, by whom she had four children: Amelia, Laura, Lillian and Emma. Mr. Dullin died April17, 1886. Mr. Greener is a piano manufacture having learned the business with Fred Mattushuk, being now the oldest dealer in music and musical Instruments in Elmira. He was for twelve years and a half in company with Mr. Eliason under the firm name of Eliason, Greener & Co.

Griffith, David H. native of Llanelly, Camarthenshire, Wales, and brother of the Rev. John Griffith, vicar of Monmouthshire was born on December 14, 1837, and May 6, 1864, married Elizabeth Thomas. They came to the United States in 1866 and to Elmira in 1867. Their four children are John H., born September 26,
1865; Elizabeth J. born March 2,1867; Annie M., born August 18, 1868; and Margaret J., born June 5, 1873. John H. Griffith graduated from the Elmira Academy.

Griswold, Judd of the firm of Griswold, Maloney & Co., was born in Southport, December 26, 1842, being one of four Sons born to Elijah Griswold, Sr. The father by vocation was a life-long farmer and a resident of Southport where he died hi 1867, aged sixty-six years. Judd Griswold followed farming until the war broke out, He enlisted in August 1862, in Company K, One Hundred and Forty-first New York Vo1uoteer Infantry, serving to the close of the war, being mustered out at Washington. He was promoted. From private to first lieutenent had participated in the battles at Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain, and Dallas. Returning to Elmira he married, at Southport in 1868, a
Of Thomas Hopkins. He has one son.

Harper, Charles C, Who born at Allen’s Cove, Pa., March 8, l848 July13, 1864 he enlisted Company B, One Hundred and Ninety-fifth Pennsylvania Infantry Vol. and was honorably discharged November 4, 1864. In 1866 he married, daughter of Andrew and Hannah B. Jones, of Perry County, Pa. They have  children, via.: Frank C.,. Born February 16, 1867; Sally J. born February 8, 1869; Burt. Born January 4,1871, died in 1879; and Ralph born June 13, 1877, Mr. Harper has been an engineer for the Northern Central RR for ten years. John Harper was born in Chester co. Pa. Dec. 25, 1805.  He married Caroline Magar, who bore him six children; Joseph C, Frazier P, Margaret A. Henry M. John and Charles C.
Harris, Justus H. born in the town of Baldwin in 1848 the son of E. J. Harris now a farmer of Southport. He was in the lumber business with his father for some time and finally bought out the concern and ha continued since. . He married in Southport in 1872 a daughter of Jehial Ayers.

Hart, Abraham P. was born in Goshen Litchfield co. Ct. was born in April 23,1816 where he remained until he was 21 yrs of age. In 1837 he came to Elmira and was establishing a photograph gallery in that city.  He married first in 1939 Angelina Badger of Elmira. They had one daughter, Harriet who married James W. Morehouse of Rochester NY. In 1877 Mr. Hart married second Mrs. M. Louisa Hathorn of Elmira.

Hart, William E. a native of Goshen Litchefield co. Ct. was born in 1817 and came with his parents to Elmira about 1825, where he received his education. HE left home in 1836 when he went to Angelica where he remained until 1842 as a clerk in a dry goods store.  He returned to Elmira and began business for himself as a general merchant.  He retired in 1882. Mr. Hart married twice, first in Sept. 1844 Elizabeth M Hull of Angelica, Allegany co. NY.  They had three children viz; Fred, who was burned to death at the Sanitary Fair at the Presbyterian church in 1864; Frank P a merchant in Wellsboro, Tioga Co. and Alice El who married Seward F. Gould, of West Avon Livingston co. NY. He married 2nd wife 1856 Delia A Case of Earlville, Madison co NY. They have one son, William.

Hayes, Henry O.  born Ithaca NY July 15, 1846. He learned the trade of Mason.  When the Rebellion broke out he enlisted in co. b. 86 Ohio Inf. Vol.  And reenlisted in co. g. 15th NY Cavalry, serving tills the close of the war. He married Sept 17, 1868, Mary m. Bennett. They have one son Floyd J. born Jan. 23, 1871. Mr. Hayes father John C. Hayes was born in Owego and married Harriet N. Clark of Ithaca. They had eight children.

Hedden, John W. M. D. was born in Schuyler co NY. Oct. 22, 1846. 1884 he removed to Corning with his law business and than to Elmira in April 1890. He was married at Dey’s Landing NY in 1875, to Miss Alzada daughter of the late inventor Elias Hungerford. They have one son.

Heldrich Phillipp, M D was born in Bavaria Germany May 10, 1851 is a son of one who was many years forester and consulting member of the Treasury Dept. of Bavaria. He was honorably discharged from the Franco-Prussian war taking, with the right to wear the uniform of the army in 1873 with the rank of second lieutenant eleventh Bavarian In 1873.  Coming to America he returned to the pursuit of his education. Coming to America in 1880 he afterward entered the University of Maryland and was graduated there from in He began practice at once in Elmira and has since remained in this city. He is a member of the local medical societies and the surgeon of the Thirtieth Separate Company N. G. S. N. Y. Ha was married, in Baltimore, in 1883, to a Miss Somerteld.

Heller, Charles, was born in the town (now city) of Elmira on the farm on which he now resides on April 25, 1821. His father, Michael Belier, and his mother, Catharine Wormeley, were German, and came from Lancaster County, Pa., to Chemung County in 1805, purchasing land at or near Carr’s Corners. The family of Michael Belier consisted. of ten children, of whom two are now living, Mary Heller Marsh of Southport. Charles Heller was educated at the public schools and the Elmira Academy. January 9,1851, he married Mary, the second daughter of David Neish, who was born in
Scotland and who were one of the earliest settlers of the town of Erin. They have four children: Harriet B., who married 0. M. Wixon, of Elmira. A farmer and city supervisor; Frances H., who married I. R. Taylor, of Elmira; and Michael Burt and David N., graduates of the Elmira Academy and the Cornell University. The oldest. is in business.

Herendeen Edward G. of the Elmira Bar born in Wayne co NY --19, 1887 is a son of E W Herendeen of Geneva NY.  He was a graduate of Hobart College.
  Mr. Herendeen married April 1887 Miss Ida S Barton of R. E. Barton of Elmira.  She died Oct. 1, 1889 leaving an infant son.

Hibbard, Gardiner C. born in Beaver Damn Schuyler Co NY Aug. 2, -- He resided in NY city until Nov. 30, 1861 when his fathers family moved t Watkins NY.  He enlisted on March 10 as private of Co. I. 103 Reg. NY Vol.

Hibbard, Gardiner was born in Beaver Dams, Schuyler county, He resided in NY city until November 30, 1861 until November 30,1861, when his father’s family moved to Watkins Academy. Attending the Watkins Academy. HE is the son of George F.  And Elizabeth Crum Hibbard, who married where the Hibbard family resided 150 yrs. What now is Union Square was the farm land of Great grandfather of Gardiner C. Most of the male served in the Rev. and the war of 1812. Mr. Hubbard Married 1878 Lydia J. daughter of Elijah Higley of Penn Yan NY. they have one child a daughter Adria Lucille born Jan. 1, 1882.

Hildreth, Isaac Jr.  A locomotive engineer was born August 6 1847 in Geneva, Ontario County, N. Y., and received his education in the public schools and in Stanley Seminary. March 21, 1864, He enlisted in company B, 179th Inf.  and New York Vol.  Was wounded in the mine explosion before Petersburg, Ju1y 30, 1863, and was discharged for disability December 21, 1864. Mr. Hildreth married Lois A Gardner of Big Stream, Yates Co. NY. and had born to him seven children of whom were, Edward, Alonzo and Fannie died in Infancy and George M. Grace M. and Ruth L. survive. They resided In Elmira for twenty-four years.  His father, Isaac Hildreth born in shaftbury, Vt. married Phebe Cunningham of Middletown Orange Co. NY they had six children.
Still living, vis.  Laura, John, Isaac, Jr, and Mazy. Mr. Hildreth was the pioneer of the nursery stock business in both Ontario and Yates Co.
 

Hillman William H. was born Chemung Dec. 23, 1847. After receiving a public school education he studied civil engineering and surveying with John Bosworth of Waverly, N. Y., and is now a farmer and surveyor. The farm on which he resides and which he owns was deeded to his great-grandfather by the State of New York July 31, 1870, Mr.. Hillman married charlotte Swain of Waverly. She was a schoolteacher. They have had four children, viz.: Rose D, Jennie, 8atie,aud John. His grandfather was a captain in the War of 1812.
Hoffman, Edward M., of the firm of EM. & H N. Hoffman, growers of fruit and roses, was born. on January 14, 1857, and is a son of George W. Hoffman. He worked three years for the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Express Company and in 1885 engaged in the nursery business. Mr. Hoffman  on October 1, 1874 enlisted in Company  D, One Hundred and Tenth Battalion N. G. S. N. Y., as a private and April 2,1877, was made secoud-lieutenant of the same company, whose destogmation soon changed  atterward changed to the Thirtieth Separate Company Infantry. He
was promoted first-lieutenant of the latter company on November 29, 1881, and lieutenant—colonel and assistant-adjutant-general of the Seventh Brigade on December 6, 1884. August 5,1885, he was placed on the supernumary list by reason of the disbandmeut of tbe brigade. In 1886 Mr. Hoffman was again made first lieutenant of the thirtieth separate Company, and in September, 1890, was promoted captain of the company. He devoted his time assiduously to business and to military matters October 19, 1882, he married a daughter of William A. Brooks. They have no children. The business of K H. N. Hoffman was established in the spring of 1885. They now handle 500,000 trees yearly.

Hoffman George W. 2nd was born on  farm upon which he resides June 23, 1867, He went to  public schools and in the Elmira Commercial Collage, and January
10, 1890, married Georgia. daughter of John F. and Harriet S. Hommel, of. Pine City. They have one son Joseph T born February 14, 1891. Mr. Hoffmans father, Joseph, was born in Newtowu (now Elmira) about 1818. He married Phebe Higgins of the same place, by whom he had four children who survive: Estella, Josie, George W., 2d, and John S. The family were among the earliest settlers and were of German extraction. The  first log house that Colonel Hendy built is in a good state of preservation
Hoffmman, John Smith son  of William, was born in Southport, July 2, 1811, and in. early life he began a hatter. In 1837 he formed a co-partnership with Nelson W. Gardinier, which continued until 1843. Hats were nearly all made by band in those days. Mr. Hoffman married, first,. on September 28, 1836, .Minerva Kirtland, who died July 18, 1838. they had one daughter Frances M., who married Charles A Northrup. For his second wife Mr. Hoffman married, February 2, 1842 Lydia Logan of Elmira, who. bore him two children, of whom one died at the age of twelve years and one, Eloise E., survive.  Mr. Hoffman was supervisor for eight years, was assessor three years, towu clerk two years, and for many years conducted a large lumber trade. He retired from active business in 1881. Mrs: Holilnan died in 1890. Mr. Hoflman’s father, one of the sturdy pioneers of Chemung County, first came to Newtown from Northumberland, Pa., In 1799,and located here in 1800. In a recent article on the old citizens of Elmira the author of this volumn says: “William Hoffman was the noblest Roman of them all.” He married first  Peggy Smith, by whom he had one daughter, Margaret  and 2nd Sally Smith who bore him six children: John S., Jacob, William, jr., Joseph, George W and Henry C.
Hogan, James Henry the present  alderman of the Second ward, was born in Elmira, June 19, 1866. a son of the late Dennis Hgan who came from Ireland in 1849, working for the Northern Central RR for 23 yrs. He died in 1888 aged sixtynine years.. James H. graduated from graded school No.5, of Elmira and was there employed by the Union News Company, .having in all worked about eight years. for that concern. From 1884 to 1889 be had charge of the company’s business at that point  March, 1889, at the age of but twenty-two he was elected alderman, being the youngest of that body ever elected to the office. He has always been a Democrat. A member of the Catholic Church, is recording secretary of the Liberal League, and is one  of the proprietors of the Paragon Hotel. Mr. Hogan in 1888 led the movement to throw off the ring rule of the politic. of the wards, and as the leader of the “Forty Club succeeded in changing the powers.

Holden, Horace W. who was born  April 25, 1827, acquired his education  and has been a druggist since 1852.  April 8, 1856, he married Laura A. Williams and they have had six ehildren Emma, Ross, Ella, Archie, all deceased. and Elsie born Oct. 5, 1867  and Herbert W. born Dec. 3, 1870. The latter attended the grad schools of Elmira and graduated from the commercial college and is a druggist with his father. Holden enlisted October 16, 1861, in Company D, 57th  and was transfered in Sept. 1864 on account of physical disability. His father Daniel Holden was born in Barry Mass. in 1786 and married Lydia Lounsbury.  was born NY state.  They had 9 children, Eliza, Lucy, Daniel L, Isaac, Dewitt C. Johns A, George R. Horace W. and Reuben N.

Ingham John Q. was born Sept.  4,1838, in Bradford County, Pa~
and is a son  of Joseph Ingham; M.D., He died in Bradford County in 1843. He was educated in Wyoming Seminary. He married at Wyalusing May 13, 1863, Nancy P., daughter of John Black a prominent citizen of Bradford County, Pa. They have four daughters Eva M,  (Mrs. Waiter Aspiawall, of Buffalo, who hs a daughter Helen)
