OLD GRAVEYARD INSCRIPTIONS FROM COLUMBIA AND RENSSELAER COUNTIES, NEW YORK. L. HASBROUCK VON SARLER.

The following inscriptions were copied tinder my personal direction, in a small graveyard, located on the extreme eastern border of Austerlitz, Columbia County. It is on a hillside, commanding an extensive view of the Berkshire Hills, and is so far from the out of the way road, that a stranger would have difficulty in finding it. Although many of our best known names are represented there, it is in a most neglected condition, and I was obliged to have a workman dig up some of the stones, to read them. Many are buried without marked headstones, and a few stones have simply initials. Several of the inscribed ones are broken. Unfortunately the fate of small public, and private graveyards in this country is a disgrace, to the owners of the surrounding lands, or of the farms on which they are located. The same can frequently be said of the old parts of some of the larger ones. If each town, or locality, or individual owners, would take a proper interest in the last resting-place of earlier

KING'S (NOW COLUMBIA) COLLEGE. AND ITS EARLiEST ALUMNI,

  SADLER CEMETERY.
The inscriptions were copied September 30,1876, and include all in the Cemetery. At that time the grounds were in a neglected condition, and but few interments had been made recently. There had been many removals to other burying grounds and a few years later the remains of all that were interred there were removed to Greenridge Cemetery in the same Village. The Sadler Cemetery was the first and oldest burying ground within the Village Corporation, and was sometimes called the "First Cemetery." It was located on the high land on the east side of Nelson Street, a few rods south of Spring Avenue and overlooking the High Rock, Star and Red Springs.Inscriptions were copied by Edward D. Harris.
