There are mistakes, but I am trying to get them all taken care of, so keep that in mind.
This is a hard project to undertake!
If there is not an exact date then you can add or - a year or so to those dates.
I am working off of census reports mainly, and there is room for error.

Source on following info: Living Mills Harding, my grandma, states that in 1940-1941 the Harding men were all working for the government on another contract. They were building Ft Leonardwood barracks to supply housing for the soldiers that were being transferred there.

The construction workers camped out by the river while working at Ft Leonardwood. She said in order to wash clothes, she had her washboard and sat by the river & scrubbed the clothes. Then to dry them, she hung them up in trees. Pretty resourceful if you ask me! lol She whistled and sang songs, they would come by and say "Hey sing some more, we were listening."

Once the job was completed, she stated that as they were packing, she saw train loads of soliders all traveling in. She said she'd never seen such a sight as the trains lined up and so many soldiers in one place.

I'm so happy that my Grandma is with us, she's 84, and she's provided me with tons of information on the family and their journey.

Samuel Vorhees HARDING
aka Sam or Grandad
b June 2, 1885 Keysburg, KY
Son of John Henry HARDING, esq & Ida H.
[GRIMES] HARDING
d. 13 Dec 1956 was 71 yrs 6 mos 11 days old.
Buried 17 Dec 1956 Restlawn Memorial Cemetery, El Paso, El Paso Co, Texas

Accomplishments: Building-Construction-Heavy Equipment Operator. Union Worker many companies over the years.

We called him Granddad. He was a very talented man, the family traveled as he moved from job site to job site, but they did stop for a while and had a farm in Holland, MO. I imagine that he could do just about anything that he put his mind to, much like my Grandfather and Father can.

My Dad & Aunt said that they remember going to see Mamaw and Granddad and smelling the Karo Syrup made at Staley's Plant in 1943-44 Decatur, IL. Auntie said it made her hungry. For amusement & to help Brewer, they took a putty type of substance & rolled it on the wallpaper in the kitchen to remove the black soot that would gather on the walls from having coal heaters. They said it was fun to do. You know Mamaw appreciated it, too.

Granddad didn't want to give up his driving priviledges. I'll tell that story at a later date. He would approach one set of tracks and for some reason never give his old truck enough gas to get over the tracks. Nan says that he would approach the tracks, and roll back, approach the tracks, and roll back. He did this every day since they lived next to the RR tracks. One time he was hit by a train it didn't hurt him but tore his old truck up. [sic]

Final Accomplishment: Marrying a wonderful "lady" and having a Great son, my Grandpa, John M. HARDING.

Both of them, Mamaw & Grandad died from carbon monozide affixiation. Sam was still alive when Dad, John M. Harding, found them (they lived next door). Auntie says, "I remember hearing his loud, raspy breathing everytime we got off the elevator at the hospital and his room was way down the hall." Brewer died 2 days before him. Sam was just so strong, it took a long time for him to go.

PORTER and Harriett P SPROUSE PORTER
d. 11 Dec 1956 10:00 a.m. was 77 yrs 5 mos 29 days old. Buried 17 Dec 1956 Restlawn Memorial Cemetery El Paso, El Paso County, Texas
She was a very devoted Christian Lady, no matter where they lived, she would take the kids to church, all demonation and the "black" churches [sic]. She was
5' 6" tall, had very long hair, normally worn in a bun. She wore long dresses that had long sleeves, Her dresses were always made out of Voile material. She was a "really sweet lady" as told to me by all family members.

We called her Mamaw and although she died 1 1/2 years before I was born, I feel as if I know her and some of her family. When Mamaw & Granddad lived in Holland, MO she taught school to the farmers children. She never stopped learning, she would open a dictionary and learn a new word every day of her life. They moved to Decatur, IL for a while.

Accomplishments: 1st and foremost raising a Wonderful son, my Grandfather. She must have been a kind soul since John M was so sweet. "She was good to all people." My Father and Aunt have told me, they would go with her into any church "white" or "colored" it didn't matter to her, as long as they were there.

Mamaw ran a boarding house, renting out many rooms and caring for all of the people. They had many renters, including young girls that attended college there in Decatur, IL, 1940s. She also sold fish on her front steps. Her favorite thing to do was to go out on her front porch and just sit and watch the people pass by.

My Dad, Aunt, and Brewer on the front steps of the Boarding House, located on El Dorado St in Decatur, IL in 1943 (we believe).

Final Accomplishment: Putting up with Sam! ;)
Both sides of the family agree with me on this issue. lol

His obit states that he had one brother living at the time of his death by the name of J.L. Harding of Daylight, TN & 2 sisters: Mrs. Minnie Whitlock and Mrs. Matt Bogle, both of Daylight, TN. So I take it that JL was the same as Lewis. More on Robert Taylor HARDING -- obit is list on the Records toward bottom of that page.

1. Carpenter HARDING b. abt 1816 OH d. 5 May 1884-8 Near Liberty Dekalb Co, TN. Enlisted 26 March 1864 13th Battery of Indiana Light Artillery at Indianapolis, IN. He transferred from one company to another due to health issues, eyes and hearing. At time of death, he was almost if not blind and could hardly hear from the "Roaring of the Artillery" That's why he served in 2 different companies, we believe. He transferred out of one because of health issues. He had several furloughs during the Civil War since it was easier back then to send the soldiers home for extended recovery having the family members care for them, rather than the Armies trying to care for them.
