1860-1870 (Census 1870 Family not found) must've been moving - Now know that the family had still been in Jackson County, Ind. Ann remained, sought divorce from Carpenter & was finalized in Sept 1871. JHH and Carpenter moved from Reddington, Indiana to Sumner, or another place in TN, 1 week after Civil War ended. Carpenter bought land, had a farm, lived there for a couple of years, then moved on to Dekalb County, TN. Both JHH and Carpenter served together in the Civil War for the last 15 months. JHH was mustered in to Carpenters unit in April 1864. Their unit moved to Chatanooga, TN for the last 6 months of the Civil War, Jan 1865 to July 1865. At the end of the war, Carpenter and JHH returned to their home in Reddington, Ind, stayed for a week, and moved on to an area outside of Chatanooga where Carpenter bought a farm. JHH returned to Ind with his mother shortly thereafter. JHH later moved to Keysburg, Logan County, KY by 1878.

Barb (my Sprouse cousin) found Carpenters son Johnson Harding JHH Brother:

Later Carrie applies for a widows pension for Johnson I'll try to track when he died but have not had luck yet. Carpenter is presently living in Sumner Co Gallatin, Carpenter and JHH served in the same company during the Civil War and they were stationed there for a while. I suppose Carpenter enjoyed the area, met Narcissa SPURLOCK here during the early 1870's and married her, his 2nd marriage.

I am in the process of Ordering his Civil War Pension file now.

MARRIAGE:
World Connect Entry: Daniel Carpenter HARDING married to Ann VORHES who was b. 23 July 1817 daughter of Samuel VORHES b. 12 October 1791; d. 16 Mar 1844 Hamilton Co. OH and Jane Lackey b. 8 Jan 1795 Fayette Co. PA

World Connect is the first That I've noticed showing his name as Daniel Carpenter HARDING. I found Caroline's tombstone listed online, on her head stone it lists her father as being Daniel Carpenter HARDING and mother is Ann [VORHEES] HARDING, however this was not from her, she was dead! Therefore 2nd hand information likely to be incorrect, and whomever supplied it was grieving at the time, therefore, more likely to make a mistake.

Sumations

Fact 1: On John Henry Hardings death cert it states C.P. Harding as Father (source was his oldest son Hal S. Harding), Anna Vorhees as Mother. Same family, right ages, brothers and sisters all match throughout census reports so I know these facts are correct. CP Harding is his name however in some documents "Daniel" is what he is referred as.

Fact 2: In the "Hardings In America" book written by Wilbur Harding he does not refer to Carpenter Harding son of Stephen, wife is Ann Vorhees as being a "Daniel C. Harding" nor does his Military Pension when his 2nd wife, Narsissa (Narcissa) Harding applied for pension for a child with the last name of "Boyle" under Carpenter Hardings name. Mattie Harding had married a Mr Boyle and the Narcissa family was still pursuing the pension claim. Carpenter in each turn is still NOT called Daniel! In short, NO Written Proof that I can find or that others can supply is backing up the statement that his name is Daniel Carpenter Harding, it is simply Carpenter P Harding. It that has confused or slowed down my search a bit, but I"m not one that is easily thrown. ;)

Fact 3: On Caroline Harding Davis tombstone has this written: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/in/jackson/cemetery/burk_2.txt
Davis, Caroline Harding 130 Age 85y 7m 14d died May 28 1931 Burial Reddington, Indiana

Marriage: CHEATHAM, H. L. W.       GRIMES, SUE C.       13 Feb 1868       Logan       KY
This is Ida GRIMES sister and both of these people are buried, same stone among the 10 Harding Family Plots at Elmwood in Springfield, Robertson Co, TN, one of which is unmarked.

More on Cheathams:
H.L.W. Cheatham was Hugh Lawson White Cheatham (1841-1917) who was the son of Richard Cheatham & Susan Saunders. Hugh's older brother was Edward Saunders Cheatham, for whom Cheatham Co. Tn. was named after. Hugh's wife was Susan "Sue" C. GRIMES, dau. of James T. Grimes, b. 23 Dec. 1847 (no death date available). Susan is a sister of Ida H. Harding (1860-1914), who you identify as the wife of John Henry Harding and dau. of James Grimes & Frances Gatewood. That might explain why HLW & Susan (Grimes) Cheatham are buried in the Harding plot. Let me know if you think this makes sense - Information provided by Bill Cheatham Thanks Bill!

HARDING, Robert Taylor 1888-1952
R.T. Harding, 64, Church Worker, Nurseryman, Dies
R.T. (Bob) Harding, 64, McMinnville nurseryman and a leader in the work of the Church of Christ in this area for over a quarter of a century, died at Vanderbilt hospital, Nashville, Friday morning at 3 O'clock, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 4 O'clock at Central Church of Christ. Allen Phy, minister, and William H. Lewis, minister of Bybee's Branch Church of Christ, officiated and burial was in Mt. View cemetery. Church of Christ ministers in this area served as pallbearers. Mr. Harding had been ill for fifteen days prior to his death, which was attributed to a heart condition. Robert Taylor Harding was born in DeKalb county, May 10, 1888. He was a son of Carpenter Harding and Narcissus Spurlock Harding.

He was married to Miss Helen Barrett October 10, 1906. He moved to Warren county in 1907 where he was engaged in farming and the nursery business for a number of years. After residing in the Daylight community for 37 years, Mr. Harding moved to McMinnville eight years ago and since that time he had been engaged in the nursery business and landscaping business. A member of the Church of Christ for forty years, Mr. Harding had been active in the work of the church in this area and for the past twelve years had been serving as a part-time preacher for several rural congregations in this vicinity. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Brownlow Hammer, Chattanooga, Mrs. W.A. Henegar, McMinnville, and Mrs. Jack Coldsnow, Murfreesboro; one brother, J.L. Harding, Daylight, and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Whitlock and Mrs. Matt Bogle, both of Daylight. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Southern Standard, McMinnville, TN. June 12, 1952, p. 9.

JONES, Nettie Jane  1885-1949

Jones Daylight postmaster and well known Warren county citizen, died suddenly at the home in the 13th district Friday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock.  Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Earlyville Church of Christ. Vestal Chaffin, minister of the East End Church of Christ officiated and burial was in the Kirby cemetery.  Mrs. Jones, a native of Cannon county, was born at Gassaway May 23, 1885. She was a daughter of Charles Spurlock and was first married to the late Oscar Harding. He died in March 1917. She was married to Mr. Jones on February 7, 1949 and was a member of the Church of
Christ.  In addition to her husband, Mrs. Jones is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jess Lance of McMinnville, and two sons, Manfred Harding, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Oscar Brown Harding, Chattanooga. Also eight grandchildren, one nephew, Charles Harding, Detroit, Mich., and one niece, Mrs. Fred Wilson, Unity, Tenn. Arrangements were by High Funeral Home. Southern Standard, McMinnville, TN. June 3, 1949.

Have Land records from JH Harding and Ida Grimes, will have to transcribe and it's a bigggg file! Lawsuits, court dates, etc. I'll do it all eventually. :)
Now have Carpenter Harding Military File from the National Archives. If time and web space allows I will scan some of the documents and link them to these pages.
