Issac Smart, a farmer, was born in Union County May 16, 1850, and is a son of Joseph and Hannah C. (Cowgill) Smart, natives of Ohio, of German descent. They came to Union County in 1849, and located on a farm in Claibourne Township, where the father died in 1879. The mother now resides with our subject, who is engaged in farming, at which he has worked all his life. He was educated in the district school, and in 1872 married Harriet Wurtsbaugh, whose people were of German and Irish descent. By this union two children were born-Lora and Lawrence. Mr. Smart was the ninth child of his father's family of ten children, six of whom reached their majority.
