JOHN E. HOWE
John E. Howe, of the firm of Loveless, Howe & Bishop, proprietors
of the Richwood Woolen Mills, and dealers in wool, grain, hides, furs
and staves, was born in Logan County, Ohio, September 26, 1845 ; he is
a son of Julius and Ellen (Richardson) Howe, the former a native of
Vermont and the latter of Ohio. His parents came to this State in
1830, and located on a farm in Logan County, where the subject of this
sketch was reared. He remained on the farm until twelve years of
age, when he began working at his present business for J. S. Loveless,
with whom he worked four years, to learn the trade, receiving $30 and
three months schooling per year. He proved himself such a worthy
apprentice that his employer took him as a partner, and with him
carried on the business until recently, when the firm assumed its
present proportions and style. Mr. Howe was married, in 1869, to
Elizabeth Gum, a native of Logan County, Ohio, of English descent, and
by her has had one child George R. Mrs. Howe is a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Howe is a Republican in
politics. He is a successful business man, and owns a
half-interest in 265 acres of land in Washington Township, which he has
accumulated by his own efforts.
