WILLIAM CARROLL HASTINGS
William Carroll Hastings, of the firm of Hastings & Williams,
dealer in buggies, carriages, spring-wagons, seed-drills, etc., was
born at Richwood, Ohio, August 29, 1844, and is a son of Levin
Hastings, and Mary Carroll, his wife, of whom a sketch is given
elsewhere in this work. Our subject was educated in the common
schools and is a harness maker by trade. He has spent ten years
in stock dealing at Rich wood, and engaged in importing Norman horses
to Union County; he is a man that learns from observation, has spent
some time in the West, and has seen a good deal of the world. In
1864, he enlisted in Company K, One Hundred and Thirty-eighth Illinois
Volunteer Infantry, and served his full term of enlistment. He
then came to Richwood, where he has since remained. He is a
Republican in politics, and since 1881 has served as Treasurer of his
township. In 1869, he married Miss Cynthia Lenox, daughter of
John Lenox, a prominent farmer and stock dealer of Union County; this
union has been blessed with two children, Mary and Anna.
