Transcribed by Elizabeth Glover HOWARD Checked by Val HENDERSON Pages 135 - 140 BUDLEIGH (EAST) AND BUDLEIGH SALTERTON - BUDLEIGH (EAST) is a parish and village in St. Thomas`s union, containing, by the census of 1861, 2496 inhabitants, and 3277 acres; in the deanery of Aylesbeare, archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, the hundred to which it gives its name, East Devonshire; 5 miles south-west from Sidmouth, 6 north-east from Exmouth, and 11 south-east from Exeter. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. George Dacres Adams, B.A., is valued at £318 per annum, with residence and nine acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the trustees of the late Lord Rolle. The rectorial tithes were commuted, in 1845, at £346 8s., and the vicarial at £223 per annum. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to All Saints, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and tower with five bells. The Independents have a place of worship here. There are National Schools for children of both sexes, which have an endowment of £75 per annum, which was bequeathed by Robert Drake of Littleham, in 1628. There are other charitable bequests, producing about £103 per annum. The late John Hine, Esq., of Leeford, bequeathed £90 per annum, to be applied as follows: £30 to the school, £30 to the poor, and £30 to the East Budleigh and Budleigh Salterton Benevolent Society. The trustees of the late Lord Rolle are lords of the manor and chief landowners. Here is a pleasure fair, yearly, on Easter Tuesday. HAYES BARTON, now a farm-house, is noted as the birth-place of Sir Walter Raleigh, who was born in 1552. His services to his country, and his popularity at the court of Queen Elizabeth, are matters of English history; but, on the accession of King James, he was falsely accused, and imprisoned in the Tower for 13 years, during which he wrote his celebrated "History of the World." He was at length released, but was again arrested on the warrant which was signed 15 years previously, and was condemned to death, and, on the following day, 29th December 1618, was beheaded. His lady obtained possession of his head. She survived him some time, and was buried in this church. BUDLEIGH SALTERTON is a watering place, village, and hamlet of this parish, in the same jurisdiction, pleasantly situate on the sea coast, 2 miles south from thence, 5 east from Exmouth, 7 south-west from Sidmouth, and 13 south-east from Exeter. It is a place rapidly and deservedly increasing in size and popularity. In 1869, the Parade was doubled in length by the trustees of the Rolle estate, who are the chief landowners, and few sea-side places can boast of a better or more sheltered promenade. A large and commodious hotel has been built by its spirited proprietor, Mr. J. Harwood; handsome villas have sprung up on all sides; the whole place wears an appearance of brightness, cleanliness, and prosperity; and an Improvement Committee, composed of several of the most active of the gentry and tradesmen, contribute much, by their efforts, to this appearance. The chapel-of-ease, a very plain building, was built in 1812, and enlarged in 1837; the Rev. J. W. Hitch is the officiating clergyman. There is a Wesleyan chapel in the centre of the village, a Baptist chapel at the west end, at Little Knowle, and National schools, endowed with £40 from Drake`s charity. There is also a Literary Institution and Reading Room, in connection with which is a very handsome Assembly Room, where, besides the admirably-conducted penny readings held during the winter season, and many other entertainments, several balls are held every year, which have obtained such a good name that they are always well attended by the elite of the whole neighbourhood. Budleigh Salterton has a great reputation for the purity and healthiness of its air, and many of its inhabitants took up their residence in it 10, 20, and 30 years ago, not expecting to live as many months. There are good cricket, archery, and croquet clubs; the sea fishing is excellent; and many of the residents and visitors are, through the kind ness* of Lady Rolle, of Bicton, permitted to angle on the river Otter. The walks in the neighbourhood are exceedingly varied and beautiful, and, owing to the dryness of the soil, are available at all seasons. There is a coast-guard station here.. A Freemasons' Lodge is held at the Rolle Arms. Omnibuses run daily to Exmouth, three times each way in winter, and four times in summer. GREAT KNOWLE and LITTLE KNOWLE are also hamlets, forming part and parcel of this parish. |
