Contact.   Transcribed by Val HENDERSON Checked by William COOKE Pages 409 - 410   HIGH BICKINGTON is a village and parish in Torrington union, containing, by the census of 1861, 738 inhabitants, and 4194 acres; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, hundred of North Tawton, North Devonshire; 2 miles from the Portsmouth Arms Station on the North Devon Railway, 8 east from Great Torrington, and 9 south-east from Barnstaple. The rectory, in the patronage and incumbancy of the Rev. Alfred Langdon, B.A., is valued at £475 per annum, with residence and 160 acres of glebe land. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to Saint Mary, consisting of nave, chancel, north aisle, and south porch. The Baptists have a place of worship here. There is a parochial school for children of both sexes, to which £50 per year was awarded by a decree in Chancery in 1855 out of the Pincombe Trust Estates, for the education of children in the principles of the Established Church. The poor have charitable bequests producing £8 per annum. The Hon. Mark Rolle, the Pincombe Trustees, and John Bremridge, Esq., are the chief landowners; and there is a manor attached to the rectory, of which the rector is lord.
