OTTERTON is a village and parish in St. Thomas`s union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1140 inhabitants, and 3479 acres; in the deanery of Aylesbeare, archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, hundred of East Pudleigh*, East Devonshire, on the east bank of the river Otter, near to the sea coast ; 3½ miles south-west from Sidmouth, 3 north-east from Budleigh Salterton, and 12 south-east from Exeter. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. Michael, with tower and five bells, and is about to be pulled down, and a new one built at the expense of Lady Rolle.
