PARKHAM is a village and parish in Bideford union, containing by the census of 1861 , 886 inhabitants and 5808 acres in the deanery of Hartland, archdeaconry of Barnstaple , diocese of Exeter; hundred of Shebbear, North Devonshire; near the small river Yeo, adjoining Barnstaple Bay, 6 miles south-west from Bideford. The rectory is in the incumbency of the Rev Edward HENSLEY MA had the tithes commuted in 1841, at £730 per annum and has residence and 119 acres of glebe land; it is in the patronage of William Henry STONE Esq . The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St James; in the Gothic style, consisting of a nave, chancel, north and south aisles, with tower containing six bells. The Bible Christians and Wesleyans have places of worship here. There is a National School for children of both sexes. The Hon Mark ROLLE is Lord of the manor and he and Samuel Trehawke KEKEWICH Esq., and J PINE-COFFIN Esq., are the principal landowners. ASH 2 miles west; BROAD PARKHAM , 1½ miles south-west, HORN'S CROSS 1½ miles north, and BUCK MILLS 2½ north-west are hamlets of this parish. GOLDWORTHY 1 mile north-west is also a hamlet, noted as the birth place of the poet Gay.
