  PORTLEMOUTH (EAST) is a village and parish in Kingsbride union, containing, by the census of 1861, 403 inhabitants, and 2143 acres; in the deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes,, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Coleridge, East Devonshire; 6 miles south from Kingsbridge, situated on elevated grounf overlooking Salcombe Bay, with an extensive sea view, including the lofty cliffs of Prawle Point. A ferry connects this place with Salcombe. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Bury Wells, M.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1839, at £347 per annum, with residence and 30 acres of glebe land, and is in the joint patronage of the Duchess of Cleveland and Lord Sandwich. The church is an ancient Gothic Cruciform edifice, much dilapidated, containing nort, south, and central aisles, with tower and three bells.

HOLSET and RICKHAM are hamlets forming part of this parish, at the latter of which is a Coast Guard Station.
