ROBOROUGH is a village and parish in Torrington union, containing, by the census of 1861, 478 inhabitants, and 3114 acres; in the deanery of Torrington, archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Fremington, North Devonshire; 4 miles south-west from the Portsmouth Arms Station, on the North Devon Railway, 6 east fron Great Torrington, 6 south from Umberleigh Station, and 10 south-east from Bideford. The rectory is in the incumbency of the Rev. William Walter Gurney, LL.B., who was collated thereto more than thirty years ago, and at whose demise it reverts to the heir of the Rev. Samuel May. The tithes were commuted, in 1842, at £271 per annum, with residence and 55 acres of glebe land. The church, which is dedicated to St. Peter, consists of nave, chancel, and aisle, with tower and six bells, and has recently been restored and partially rebuilt, at a cost of £900. There is a Parochial School for children of both sexes, and the Wesleyans have a place of worship here. Charles W. Hole, Esq., is lord of the manor, and he and the Hon. Mark Rolle are the chief landowners.
